Anyone really savvy with laptop/computers? think you could help?

i have been struggling with TERRRIBBBLLEEE i mean TERRIBLE Choppiness/jerking videos in my laptop. it doesnt matter what site it is coming from, any video online is extremely choppy. like, it starts doing it every 2 seconds. youtube gets me dizzy, and Viki is the worst of them all, i havent watched anything on viki for days, (which saddens me cuz i need to catch up on my dramas!! x0) . its really terrible, it gets stuck and i cant watch anything.
ive tried lowering my video quality and restarting the browsers and computers to no avail.on some rare days some days for an hour or so it works smoothly, only to get choppy later. i was wondering if it was my internet connection, but my friend brought her laptop and connected and had super smooth videos.

i am not skilled with info on computers so if you need any info on my computer, please tell me what you need to know and ill find it. im just wondering if anyone happens to know what i can do if they experienced this before, because my laptop is brand new, got the latest windows, i just dont know what is it thats causing it.

Hi bb,
did you have an update of the media player?
If the older version worked better then try to go back to that version.

Or in “worst” case scenario it could be a problem with either your sound or graphic card.

… but there are many reasons so maybe you “search” around at help forums, I can’t tell what system you are using, what pc, what version of …
And so on, so these are wild guesses.
Good luck^^

hi! ^ ^ thanks for responding to me. xD i have been to soo many help forums prior to this, have troubleshot things, still have been reading but i dont know many of whats what in the computer,so some i dont want to mess with without knowledge, (trust me, i just got the basic info from reading online as to what RAM is and things like that O.O, so you can tell where im at right now loll)
well, based on some tips and things, i tried turning off 3rd-party stuff in the settings, i DID see an improvement today and was able to watch some Viki, but then im not sure if its my internet or… i remember sometimes i would turn off third party cookies and it still wouldnt work. but today it did.
and i DID update my computer recently… it was allot of things, it updated automatically, and i know that before the update it was choppy a bit, but after its worse. i also dont know if background programs or processes have anything to do with it or certain players, but i dont understand most of that and dont want to mess up my computer by ending something.

ill see where it goes and mention it if it doesnt.
ill message the info ^ ^

Is it only video streaming that’s the issue or do you see the same effect when playing a video on your computer/DVD?

If only online, I would reinstall the flash player.

If both online and DVD, reinstall/update the driver for your graphic (and audio) card.

I’m not into computers or anything and I always have trouble with windows so I’m a mac user but maybe this will help:

  • Check if your programs are all up to date.
  • Scan for virusses/mallware/spyware and adware.
  • Do a hardware test to see if anything is failing and up for replacement. For mac there is a tool that tests your videocard, fans, HD and such.
  • Did you do a defragmentation?

Specially when you remove things and uninstall a lot of stuff it’s wise to defragment from time to time so your computer can put everything in order again. I dunno how to explain it but when you did change a lot it can leave tiny gaps on your harddrive which makes it harder for your computer to read everything properly, with defragment everything is placed in order again without gaps so your computer can read the info on your HD more easily again. If you never did defragment before it can take a few hours so don’t do it when you are in a hurry.

Ohh before you do any of my tips make sure you back up your important files, even if you don’t follow my tips make a back up. If anything is indeed failing it can make your computer crash anytime and it can be hard to recover data if you don’t know how. And if you really don’t know bring it to a computer store to check or maybe you have a family member or friend who’s into computers who can check for you?

I guess I sound like a nerd but what can you do when your dad and bro are into computers, then you hear things from time to time… LOL

thanks guys for the replies ^ ^
@bozoli its only when i go online and watch a video there, video’s on my computer are good.
maybe i should reinstall it again, thanks for that!

@dudie1 i have allot of windows updates that i need to install, but its weird because i just updated recently, so i dont know why i have 28 + updates again.
scanned, and my computer is safe. i didnt do any defragmentation, but thats good to know… but how do i do a hardware test? is that something you need to download from online? curious to know. (okay i just saw you have a tool for that… ill check my computer.

as of right now, my internet is down, but as soon as it is back up i will try a couple of online vids, and then i will follow your advices from all when i see it happening.
thats good to know about defragment. one question, if you know. will defraging erase your itunes data? as of right now, i dont have a place to back it up,but i will probably soon when i get a chance because i know its important!

thanks guys, i really appreciate your tips, you dont know ^ ^ LOL your dad and brothers must really keep you up with that stuff, thats awesome though xD i need to have someone like that so that i know more about this stuff.

I’m guessing you have a PC?

Defragmentation will not erase your iTunes data, or any data for that matter. It’s just re-placing your data together so that you have larger sections of free space on your hard drive, space which you would usually need for virtual memory, used during streaming.

But, before defragmentation, I would do a disk clean-up, to remove all the temporary and useless internet files.

Macs have a very user-friendly hardware analytics tool. I don’t think Windows has a default program like that for checking all of the components. But, since you say it’s only internet streaming that’s the issue, I would leave this for the end, when everything else fails.

P.S. I’m a proud nerd.

Mine is jerky too. Help!

Try following a few advices we already gave. Disk clean-up, defragmentation, updating your flash player…

okay thanks so much guys! so sorry for the late response, ive been dealing with some things lately but im back. i have litterally tried every single one of you guy’s tips, defragmenting, clearing caches, updating players, all of it. @bozoli @lutra @dudie1 , i listened and did all that you guys said, but i still unfortunately have this problem so i guess my laptop is just retarded and i guess i have no choice but to give up on this problem.but since its new and works well this confuses me. some days, the videos work very well, there hasnt been a day where it doesnt buffer, but certain times of day it works really well without buffering. i dont want to continue to bother any of you, since its out of my hands and you guys have helped more than enough, i really appreciate it. the only thing that really bothers me is the youtube videos, because they jerk every 2 seconds and i seriously am getting dizzy now O.O but i also found out two things that might be the problem too (not for youtube tho -_-)

  1. in viki, and in dailymotion and some other sites, i have notice an ad player further down on the page, and its playing videos/ads and sometimes pictures, but it constantly changes to the next video ad, and that i have seen is messing up the playback ALLOT. i have put my settings to block 3rd party cookies, but it doesnt get rid of these ad videos and its driving me mad. in youtube, it doesnt have these ad videos, but it still jerks. but with these other sites, the video is constantly disturbing the playback and it hardly lets me see anything.

2.i currently have my battery settings to power saver, since the battery is a built-in one, and i dont want any stress on it sometimes. but when i take it off power saver to balanced, sometimes it helps, most times it doesnt. i dont know if that does anything tho.

i am going to update my computer again (windows) and see if that does something but im scared that it will get stuck, because last time i updated the stuff in my computer, it stould forever spinning on 38 % updated and didnt move and i had to manually turn it off. i dont want to damage anything so im scared to do that again.

How are you connected to the internet with your laptop? Wifi or a cable? If it’s Wifi try to connect it with a cable and test with an other device in the same room if it’s also slow there. Over here the wifi internet can be dramatic, sometimes it’s just gone or somehow it’s very weak in my room.

To solve that problem you can buy a thingy that makes your wifi stronger or put a wifi router somewhere in your network at home.

Sorry to hear you still have problems. :frowning: Windows is so sensitive with its updates. There is a chance you stopped an important updating process, which affected your graphics/sound. You said your computer is new, so it still might have the guarantee and user support at your dealer’s.

I urge everyone nowadays to install an ad blocker into their browsers (link for which I’m going to send you by PM), because commercials have gotten vicious these days!

@dudie1 yeah,i have wifi, but it works smoothly on my friend’s computer when she visits  good to know, thanks for the info you guys!! i will try your suggestions when i get the chance.
@bozoli i hope thats not it T.T but before i updated it was happening too…
adblock, that might help me bunches! the ad is the most annoying thing on the history of the planet and is turning my eyes inside out. lol i will check your link ^ ^

okay guys O.O just thought i should do a little update on this and i think i got my problem solved a bit (or at least, im almost there…) if this is the solution i think im gonna be feeling sooooooooooo stupid because i went through allot of trouble to figure it out when it was under my nose. (at least, i hope so…)

i have been having my computer set on “power saver” on my computer for quite some time now… i DID take it off before, but i have noticed that my problem hasnt showed up for a couple of days already since the minute i switched it to balanced and elminated the ads thanks to @bozioli , and i think it was a combination of the ads that were playing in the background and the power saver mode. anyways, i took it off power saver and got rid of the ads and now its smooth sailing… for now. if it happens again, my only guess would be my internet, but so far, it hasnt stuttered once, and when i put power saver back on it started stuttering and i took it out again…

thank you all, you really did help allot!! you all helped me put this together.
