New Style of moderating Viki's main page of a show's comments

Same  I agree with @entwyfhasbeenfound here:

It’s hard to gauge whether a person is being intentionally rude or not. Something one user says could be perceived differently by someone else.
I remember my own hard times and am grateful for those who put extra effort into welcoming newbies, so I try to do the same with others

Though it’s hard to keep track of the many usernames, I do remember you and some others who I don’t see here anymore and wonder where they disappeared.

I’ve experienced a lot of “under review” on my posted comments. I know there is a e-bot shifting through all comments. But, this is happening way too often, considering I’ve literally cut way back on posting comments on shows I watch. I do so rarely, now that each episode comments is gone. Hence my question, if the purpose for the main page comments has changed?

I am very new to the the Viki discussions and I rarely read comments, so I can’t really speak on that. From the comments I have read, it seems that they are heavily moderated. There have been live comments that are hateful towards people of color. There’s also some really nasty stuff in reviews too. However, just because I haven’t personally witnessed it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Hateful people always pop up everywhere I visit to talk about dramas like Reddit and MDL so I’m sure Viki is no exception. I’m really sorry that someone made you feel unwelcome here but I’m glad that you are back🥰

I don’t get it. Isn’t this why heavy moderation was introduced? Covid-19 and real-world issues deleted? The Community asked for this. I made my own inquiry last year. And people didn’t like the old discussions. They like it when mods intervene. And if the Community is OK with these changes, then so am I. That’s my official stance.

We do want moderating, but we would like it done without a feeling of being unwelcomed. This leads to asking other hard questions.

As you may have noticed I am not involving myself that much in broader discussions these days, because I fear I can’t stay devoted to the topic. It takes up more time for me to carefully chose my words not to be misunderstood.

Like others I had nice and not as nice experiences in comment sections and discussions. Looking back I had to go to my profile I am here more or less since September 2013.

So let’s just start with comments in general, the Viki’s main page. I knew it back in the days when it was still part of the Viki structure - or would you rather say embedded in Viki, or still viikii. Back then we sometimes had an issue with “shit storms”. To contact Viki was pure luck, so most of the time all we could do was having up to 10 people burying the comments with ours until the other side got tired and gave up. The reason for “shit storms” well, for most of them we just thought the person must have been pretty bored.

Discriminating? Well possible, but less racism as a matter of fact you would hardly be able to tell the color of the skin of others. But we experienced that if someone’s nationality would transpire some people used it to “argue”.

Today’s main page comments I do no longer care. The last time an issue came up and I could neither see nor write a comment, because I am not using a disqus account. I just let it be, I have written too often to Viki, because after updates or whatever comments simply vanished on me.

The irony Viki once started a reward for certain volunteers and I became Commenter of the Year 2015, at least I think it was that year … 10 000- 15 000 comments that I wrote helping people out, or answering to questions, keeping up their mood while waiting for subtitles … It was a different time back then.

Anyway with outsourcing the comments to disqus, things got worse and more complicated at the start but now I as I didn’t consent to the last cookies because I didn’t see an option to stay away from fb and co. I don’t use them, so why would I like to give my data, although I am sure, there is some page I am using that will give them my data anyway …

That is another topic, well … Back to square one, racism no, nationalism came up a few times, but all in all Viki is a broad community and most of the people enjoy the exchange with others and do not come here with the mindset to ignore or harass people that are different from them.

Before discussions’ new regulations we sometimes had “heated” discussions about this and that, many topics are now taboo, but well - it is as it is. I still miss it because it often gave a chance to look beyond the fence.

In Germany we often say “Das Leben ist bunt / Life is colorful”, so I grew up with kids in elementary school from different backgrounds, mixed races, other nationalities, for me, it is normal and even if the number of different nationalities in my hometown increased I do not feel offended or threatened by them, but I know people who have certain fears, and it is hard to talk them out of it.

If I forgot something feel free to ask, as I just wrote it down and did not have the time to proofread it.

Your words describes the Viki fan base, and brings a calm.

Once the comment is tagged for moderator review, it certainly goes missing. Ha! I discovered my first such tagged comment hanging out in the none disqus member/Viki comments  tagged for review. I too am not a disqus member.

I meant the whole section, not only my comment or that I no longer could post a comment.

Segmenters are extremely important indeed. But I think it’s more about how you interpret the team name. It’s “Subtitle Team,” not “Subtitler Team,” which would give all credit to the subtitlers alone.
The way I see it, the subtitle team consists of everyone involved in making sure the show gets subtitles. The CM recruits the people and makes sure everything goes smoothly, the segmenters pave the way for the subtitlers, moderators or editors smoothen the work of the subtitlers … everyone is involved in the journey towards a fully subtitled show.

That’s really weird…because of what you said, I checked my own stuff…I didn’t even know I had a disqus account! I remember getting some sort of popup when I tried to comment and then fiddling around with disqus but I didn’t think about it much…
I can’t login exclusively to disqus because I have no idea what my password is, when I typed in my email ID, it says there’s no such email ID on its server. My profile picture and username are the same as my Viki ones. There’s a link just under my username that takes me to my Viki profile. I think my account is connected somehow to Viki without needing my email. I can’t see anything related to Facebook here(except that there’s an option to sign up with Facebook). I don’t have a Facebook account.

One question though: how do you talk to our team in the subtitle timer then? Even that is connected to Disqus…

It’s a cooperation between Viki and disqus, you don’t own a disqus account at disqus but, with complying to the terms of agreement you get kind of a Viki-disqus account, so outside of Viki it doesn’t work. They don’t have a password or your email to check because you never created this account.

How to correspond with team member, I only do small projects, no on-air shows, using the inbox. Movies I do by myself.

People I don’t even know how this discussion even started, but my 3 cents worth if you will. a persons outer look shouldn’t matter here, this is supposed to be “family” here, I take you"kids" as mine, be you black, white, red yellow, purple or green, You are my kids, we may have differences and all, but as for being mistreated and all here? we do have opinions, I could say I was hurt quite a few times, but I let it go in one ear and out the other. I enjoy these groups here, enjoy reading and responding, but really let it go!! like Lutra said Viki is a broad community and most of the people enjoy the exchange with others and do not come here with the mindset to ignore or harass people that are different from them.

discrimination and you folks forgive me, the Asian folk, could discriminate me, cause I am an American, and white, does that make sense?
and you other folks from other countries, you could do the same, and all of you I sure hope not! just cause I am a senior citizen,. speak my mind, white & American. in a nutshell I WANT TO BE FRIENDS, was that loud enough??

I’m sorry. But that’s the price we all have to pay when we don’t do our best to get along.

When I disappear, it’s because I have binge-watched, cried, and run out of snacks, paper towel hankies, and energy. One Friday night during the 2020 U.S. lockdown, I lay under my computer desk in my jammies and fell asleep listening to My Little Happiness. Very soothing.

Although I have been a Viki subscriber since 2013, I only became a volunteer in July of 2020 and started participating in the Community Discussions sometime after that. Since I am relatively new and I don’t read or use Timed Comments, I may not be the best person to respond, but I can talk about my observation thus far.

I truly think that most people who actively participate here in Community Discussions are very open-minded and willing to exchange opinions, learn from, and educate others. There are some who may seem rude but I don’t think racism is the cause of the rudeness. One thing I did find interesting is that very few volunteers participate in the Community Discussions. I realize that many volunteers are busy with projects and don’t have much spare time, but I think it’s important for volunteers to stay informed, and connected with the community members.

As a Kor-Eng. subber, there are times when I feel hurt reading some derogatory remarks both from the viewers and some “old-timers” about how poor subbers’ English is, and that without the help of editors, subtitles are not even understandable. Personally, I have found the quality of English subtitles has vastly improved and I’ve worked with some highly skilled translators who can demand a high salary working elsewhere. The way subtitle editor is structured, even the smallest change will result in the editor’s name showing for the particular segment, not the subtitler’s, and sometimes the change has absolutely nothing to do with translation. For example, “Hyung” is edited to “Bro” or “Mom!” is edited to “MOM!”, etc. I understand that no one outside the subtitle team will see whom the credit for a particular segment is given to but I can’t help thinking that this might dampen the enthusiasm of new volunteers.

As to comments being delayed or blocked, I noticed that Disqus automatically puts comments “on hold” if there is any mention of “subtitle”. I understand that this is because of all the negative comments regarding subtitles. However, this can sometimes cause delays in the Team Discussion for the subtitle team members.

Sigh! The thing is, we all bring something different to Viki. As a result, the fan base is collectively interesting, and enjoyable. There should not be a price to pay regardless.

This is understandable for volunteers. The question remains, do they as volunteer know about the community discussions? For fans who do not volunteer, I think there needs to be a very obvious :bridge_at_night: bridge :bridge_at_night: to the community discussions.

This comes up a lot from others in this, and other discussions.

I agree, volunteers should have their communication separated, as they talk to each other when they are working on their projects.
