New Style of moderating Viki's main page of a show's comments

I’m sorry. But that’s the price we all have to pay when we don’t do our best to get along.

When I disappear, it’s because I have binge-watched, cried, and run out of snacks, paper towel hankies, and energy. One Friday night during the 2020 U.S. lockdown, I lay under my computer desk in my jammies and fell asleep listening to My Little Happiness. Very soothing.

I will call you Kang Soo-Jin from now on.

Although I have been a Viki subscriber since 2013, I only became a volunteer in July of 2020 and started participating in the Community Discussions sometime after that. Since I am relatively new and I don’t read or use Timed Comments, I may not be the best person to respond, but I can talk about my observation thus far.

I truly think that most people who actively participate here in Community Discussions are very open-minded and willing to exchange opinions, learn from, and educate others. There are some who may seem rude but I don’t think racism is the cause of the rudeness. One thing I did find interesting is that very few volunteers participate in the Community Discussions. I realize that many volunteers are busy with projects and don’t have much spare time, but I think it’s important for volunteers to stay informed, and connected with the community members.

As a Kor-Eng. subber, there are times when I feel hurt reading some derogatory remarks both from the viewers and some “old-timers” about how poor subbers’ English is, and that without the help of editors, subtitles are not even understandable. Personally, I have found the quality of English subtitles has vastly improved and I’ve worked with some highly skilled translators who can demand a high salary working elsewhere. The way subtitle editor is structured, even the smallest change will result in the editor’s name showing for the particular segment, not the subtitler’s, and sometimes the change has absolutely nothing to do with translation. For example, “Hyung” is edited to “Bro” or “Mom!” is edited to “MOM!”, etc. I understand that no one outside the subtitle team will see whom the credit for a particular segment is given to but I can’t help thinking that this might dampen the enthusiasm of new volunteers.

As to comments being delayed or blocked, I noticed that Disqus automatically puts comments “on hold” if there is any mention of “subtitle”. I understand that this is because of all the negative comments regarding subtitles. However, this can sometimes cause delays in the Team Discussion for the subtitle team members.

Sigh! The thing is, we all bring something different to Viki. As a result, the fan base is collectively interesting, and enjoyable. There should not be a price to pay regardless.

This is understandable for volunteers. The question remains, do they as volunteer know about the community discussions? For fans who do not volunteer, I think there needs to be a very obvious :bridge_at_night: bridge :bridge_at_night: to the community discussions.

This comes up a lot from others in this, and other discussions.

I agree, volunteers should have their communication separated, as they talk to each other when they are working on their projects.

I rarely comment on Viki. But when I do, my comments always have to wait for moderation. Maybe because they are lengthy.

However, I’m pretty sure my latest comment on subtitling quality on a current on-air drama will not be published. Although I still stand by its validity. This is the first time I wrote such a comment, because I was that annoyed.

I also did not know about disqus, until Viki. As new subscribers we tend not to read every fine print. If disqus was ever mentioned I do not know, but when I realized it was there, I checked it out. I found it to be a far reaching spider net for collecting comments online. Your comments are also posted out online, I found it was everything mixed together, no restrictions on the source, or age of the posters. Think of shows you’ve watched, like Nirvana In Fire and their info’ collecting, intelligence networks

Disqus is separate, you’d need to create a user name, and password for disqus. If you choose to use the one you use for Viki, it’s a choice. At one point I created an account, and later deleted, and inactivated my disqus account. I had thought they were run by Viki at the time. Disqus is a comments beast, they are everywhere online.

:rofl: You were able to snap it before it vanished!
Puff!!:joy: Yup! This is exactly what I’m asking about, this type of moderating. @adrianmorales @frustratedwriter @irmar @lutra @mirjam_465 @loveurself_melanin @choitrio @bluedelphinium @vivi_1485 @entwyfhasbeenfound :woman_shrugging:t5:

@bozoli, I am curious. Can you reveal which show this is?

As I said, I was that annoyed. Had to send it to our group chat.

I think I prefer not to publicly.

I’m glad you did, it’s a point in case

I understand and I didn’t mean to put you on the spot. I had my own suspicion and that’s the only reason why I asked.

I don’t pay much attention to the comments & reviews anyways, so I have no idea :woman_shrugging:
As for people not being nice - I tell myself that I don’t know how the writer intended to sound and try to get information. Or maybe not and just leave it

This is a good cool off method approach, before replying, if a reply is necessary.

Honestly? NOPE not bc of racism. I don’t think they are racist, but I do KNOW they are controlling. Everything is about taking full control of this site. They have been here many years back, and they just took control of EVERYTHING in their own way. I didn’t get picked on bc I’m Hispanic but bc once they don’t want you in their ‘‘group’’ they’ll make your life a living hell, and make others think you are the bad one.

Good to know this is your experience. Everyone’s interpretation is valued. Thanks luv!

Your welcome. I mean there is a very high possibility we have racist ppl. here, but if they are, they can hide it very well. But I know is the obsession of control here bc now they even limit the REPLIES/Hearts/Likes.

I can no longer write comments that they get deleted, but when I look at the team I see who the real culprit is; never fails. Now what I do, look who’s in the team, and don’t bother writing a comment when I see certain people’s name.
