Ok here's my take. But I wonder, first and foremost, is Rakuten/Viki LISTENING at all??
Crowdfunding - no, I agree with the fact that we, the volunteers, are already doing "free work". Our work has value...(warning, approaching sarcasm...!) It's STOLEN all the time by other sites, RIGHT?
We as volunteers are in an odd position of no real negotiating power other than not working as volunteers... so...and we would HATE to see C drama or K drama or any drama we want go down in flames with NO HELP. So pretty much no negotiating power because well, they have us there, right?
SO. What we need is for the gigantic mothership Rakuten to tell US, the Viki Volunteers and Fans, what exactly we can have every year. Or even on a 3 month basis. "We will license THIS many on air, this many complete dramas, of EACH TYPE".
The budget, as it were. That's step one. Give then an idea - not exact, but HOW expensive each of our wish list dramas is.
And what I suggest to the gigantic media people is...Rate EACH of our wish list items as
SS or SSSS or what have you. Not our "need to know" whether it's 50 bucks or 50,000 bucks. Just how much on a scale of SS or SSS etc. Then...
Give us a "budget" of "SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS"
We don't have to KNOW what this means. I.E. not a look into THEIR pocket. Only that we have THAT many units we can spend.
Give some to each, Korean, Chinese, and anybody else with volunteers AND fan base. Important. Anybody caught gaming this system WITHOUT volunteer or fan support..well...there goes your
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for the next period!
Arguably...what's the majority here? Korean and Chinese? I mean, we'll be as fair as possible.
Put them up on channels, and tally votes. Let people argue their points, nicely.
(deep breath) Know that not everyone will be, or can be made happy. Sigh. Foregone conclusion, that one.
And...this sucks, but I have to add this one....
License RENEWALS should also be on the list. Some won't have a fight, like Jumong, or welll.. NIF. others, well, I personally can live without some on my "they were ok but not necessary to view again" list.
This would work, it would take some doing - and it would be yes, a fight. But as it is, aren't we fighting to get our work licensed, and so we too can enjoy it? Nothing more sad than effort thrown away...by people who care so very much.

I would be on the Korean and Chinese channels, backing what I want to see! as I already do, by volunteering and commenting. So far we haven't had a Japanese historical...? sigh.
