I’ll just use DotS as an example, because it’s so popular and a fan favorite:
You are a volunteer, but you live outside S. Korea, so you can only watch your dramas on Viki.
Let’s say you are on the segmenting team, so you are the first to watch the raw file tonight. And you have to seg part 5 out of 6 to today’s episode.
How can you not bite your nails for part 6 and at the same time not scream internally because parts 1-4 are spoiled when you see part 5?
I guess Kor- Eng subbers can watch the raw file when segmenting is in progress, and all the other languages wait for the released episode, so there’s plenty of time to watch it.
Well that’s the downside of being a segger or any other volunteer… you get spoiled. Most of the times it doesn’t matter to me but sometimes while seging I get so annoyed of the series that I decide to not just watch it later while I had planed to watch it and would have watched it if I didn’t volunteer. And when I watch Kdrama, Jdrama whatever I don’t seg I get extra annoyed when reading spoilers because for once I didn’t get spoiled while segging.
Does this even make sense?! LOL And some think we get access to the files before viewers can so they expect it to be fully subbed and segged before it’s up on Viki but no that’s not the case. We need to wait like everyone else.
Ohh and sometimes my segging is slow because I rewind something a lot just for fun and sometimes I’m singing along with a song in the background and totally forgot they also said stuff…hahahahaha.
Actually, when I start to watch a drama on which I also volunteer, but then lose interest, I use the subbing to keep up with the plot points without having to watch the whole thing.
I just choose projects that I probably won’t watch because I know that if I see parts here and there I won’t watch it ever (or at least for a few years until I forget what happened)
chase in point I started watching Tamra the Island when it aired and so I though hmmm let’s help out. still didn’t get myself past the few first eps. Same with Swallow the Sun I really liked Lee Wan and Ji Sung but ended up watching just the first 2-3 eps…
In a way, I do the same. I don’t really watch romcoms, but others do and they need the subs, so I volunteer to give them subs.
For some reason, I offered to sub Come back Ahjussi, Pied Piper and Goodbye Mr. Black and after I couple of episodes I gave up watching all of them. I still sub, of course, but it might be a curse, I won’t volunteer in dramas I want to watch from now on!!!
Uh we just do?
Pied Piper was utterly ruined becausd I couldn’t you know spend all my time keeping up when 4 eps were given. I was the only translation editor
and since you sub that you know what i mean.
I actually don’t want to watch GMB at all because I know it too well. It has nothing to do with the show just after obsessively nitpicking at it there wasn’t much enjoyment left. I watch to edit and err. it’s tough.
The only one where I wasn’t really spoiled was I think Memory and Marriage Contract. Both are nice and slow. I tend to try to go for the part 6’s in all my projects so I don’t have to spend an hour to keep up with each project (you get the PV and high points ).
I’m planning on bingewatching once this round of drama subbing is over.
In actuality. I think most subbers watch the raw and then sub. I’m just mad slow. So I don’t. I edit and sub way more than watch.
