I’m a Swedish moderator but the thing I like doing most is segmenting (that’s where my dream here at Viki started), so I’m on your side.

Dear, @vikicommunity.

Voting animals for the new Subathon’s badge it’s not an urgent matter, at least for those of us who will be unable to contribute. I’m sorry to sound rude, but as a Portuguese subber/editor, I don’t even know if I’ll be able to play along since there’s nothing left for me. All the new dramas are coming pre-subbed, we already talked about this matter before on posts, on helps, on tickets etc…

It’s such a shame that one of the largest language communities is being thrown away like that, every new channel is coming with pre-subs in Portuguese, and it’s not like we are short on translators, every day new people reach out to the moderators because they want to start to volunteering.

Usually, the only reason for us (Portuguese moderators) to turn any volunteer down was the lack of Viki pass or a team way too big for the project, however, lately we have to turn everyone down, not just newbies, but years long contributors, because it comes pre-subbed! We’re left now with variety shows, BL’s and projects with 50+ episodes that clearly ate not the selling point on Viki. Not everyone likes those and I wonder how long we can still translate it ourselves.

Soon there will only be left a bunch of Portuguese volunteers around Viki to be editors. I hope I’m completely wrong, but only Viki itself knows the answer for this. Could you give an explanation of what is happening to us, the Portuguese community? And don’t you think the segmenters also need a clarification? It’s been a long time they’re surviving from the subtitles resulting from combining and adjusting segments, and now they can’t even do that!

The future ahead of us, poor volunteers (seggers and Portuguese subbers), seems grim and uncertain, who knows if we’ll be here next year, or even if we’ll still be needed for anything else besides old shows that only a hand full is actually interested in.

I’m worried about what is ahead of us (I mean… Portuguese subber as I can speak for my community - Poor newbies, they didn’t even get a chance to start at here).

Interesting, I guess the Portuguese community doesn’t even have to worry about what animal the badge of this subathon will be, since they won’t be able to get the badge anyway

Also, would like to know how to get the badges even if there’s no projects to translate English => Portuguese. It’s difficult for the Brazilian community to keep our routine in Viki.

That’s right Sheli.
When I joined Viki there was still a bit of concern about quality, although there was an attempt to implement Vikiboot, we resisted. We could still organize our teams and really feel like a community. It was fun MAKING THE MAGIC THAT VIKI SAID SO MUCH ABOUT. We were careful not to use terms that weren’t appropriate for a period drama, to use slang at the right time and place, etc… Now we can’t anymore. The segmenters could still combine the scenes (I don’t understand why Viki prohibited it, since the loss of pre-subs is minimal). Will this be the end of the Portuguese-speaking community (mainly BR and PT) and the segmenters? Are Portuguese-speaking volunteer subbers and our fellow segmenters really so disposable?
Do subscribers complain? Yes. But that’s not the end of the world. Viki can’t take it?

Since there are not many projects available, unfortunately the majority of the members of our community (especially segmenters, English-Portuguese and English-Spanish subbers) will not have the opportunity to try to get this badge.

Mine didn’t make the list, either, just like last time. There’s no point in making suggestions, whether it’s for badges or for more urgent matters. Viki does what it wants.

and who is going to get those badges? the portuguese community isn’t for sure, with all the dramas coming with pre-subs.

It’s sad not possible contribute more… and the pre-subs isn’t god…so we just don’t understand what viki really want with us…

Its a shame what’s happens with the portuguese community, we are the biggest group of volunteers and viki is losting your purpose tha is made by volunteers, you don’t forget that in the past if the community was not present, Viki would not to be what is today. These automatics subtitles is killing the volunteers that do it for years and the new volunteer that one day dreamed about to help the community here.

that’s true, how do you put pre-subs but then need people to revise the work because the quality of the subtitles isn’t good…

Agreeing with everything that has been said here, I also decided to leave my testimony, so here it goes:
As there have not been many projects to translate, I decided to try moderation and managed to enter one, after many failed attempts.
It turns out that this same project comes pre-subbed in portuguese and I can say with certainty that it has been a headache because the subtitles have come horrible, often without the sentences make any sense, because as it was not assembled a subtitling team, I’m reviewing all the segments myself and changing them so that each episode has the minimum quality.
It is unfortunate that this is happening because there is a community of portuguese subbers so large to whom they are taking the opportunity to subtitle, and they can contribute to the delivery of a project is faster and with higher quality.
I say this also as a consumer of the series and films of the platform because sometimes the quality of subtitles in Portuguese is so bad that I choose to see them in English… and who is Portuguese and does not know English, how does the person do?
I sincerely hope that Viki will take into account everything that has been said here and reconsider its position on portuguese subbers and segmenters.

We portuguese subbers who have been here helping the community are really disapointed with how things have been going. It’s been hard to find projects without portuguese subs wich it’s really unfair with us and a lot of new contributors. For us who are moderators too it’s really sad to have to turn down a lot of volunteers who only wants to help. We are one of the largest language with contributors and it’s really sad to see how you guys have been descarting us this easily.

It’s a general concern so we need to find a solution.

I’ve been part of the community for many years, but, lately, it has been extremely hard to find project for the portuguese subbers since most of the projects are coming with pre-subs.
Viki is making us feel like we are disposable and they don’t care about us.

We are being left aside, because now all we have to do is review, we no longer have our team and this is affecting us.

I actually receive several messages trying to join Portuguese teams, and in the end I always have to say, “this program comes with subtitles, we are not recruiting”.
How are we going to do our work, how are the new interested translators who are arriving going to be able to participate if Viki is getting in the way with subtitles included?

I’m on some projects where the quality of the subtitles is terrible. I imagine some drama.s are coming without a team, CM, nothing, just translated into some languages, as they should be.
