Viki Unofficial Community Discord

Hello everyone!

There is a problem with some members being stuck on welcome room for too long. We got 320+ members but some people are either lost or not familiar with discord so they remain in welcome room without any access to the server.

If you are new to the server (or discord in general) please let me or one of our Discord staff to know and we would be more than happy to help you!

Not sure if you got access or not? If you see the “WELCOME” Channel with a bot message, it means you got no access to the server other than welcome and regulation channels. Please tag/dm us here or on discord so we can help you. We wait around 3 weeks, offer help via DMs and after 3 weeks of inactivity we kick members after sharing an invite link with them in case they’d like to come back!:heart::heart:

Is this server only for contributors? :eyes:

Yes. Upon joining the server, we’ll ask you to verify your profile to see whether you are a contributor or not.

There is, however, another server designed for watch parties and general chat about Asian dramas:

Ah, okay; thanks for confirming. I joined the server and then realised this might be the case before promptly exiting again :joy:

Hi everyone! I want to summarise this thread as well as share some updates with you!

VIKI Contributor Community
VIKI Contributor Community (aka VCC) is a platform exclusive to Viki Volunteers only. In the server we have volunteers of every position from Editors to subbers, NSSA Sensei’s to OL Mods…

~

Q: What is Discord?
A: Discord is basically a very well-organised website/app mainly created for gamers to communicate but now many communities have their servers set on it. It allows in-time chat without needing to refresh the page, can create group chats or servers and share images/gifs, and more.

Q: What is the purpose of the VIKI Contributor Community server?
A: We got many members, experienced and newbies all together in this server, so it can help with many things. Not only does it allow volunteers to have in-time chat and get to know one another more, but it also provides a space for channel managers to recruit team members, help new volunteers to find projects, get notified about occurring bugs and updates, find people of your language community and more.

Q: I’m not a volunteer. Can I join the server still?
A: Unfortunately, no. We created this server to be exclusive to volunteers and volunteers only. However, we can direct you to a social server that is for non-volunteers where you can have watch parties and socialise!

Q: What is so good about discord? We got good ol’ Viki inbox!
A: I’d like to quote @bozoli 's answer for this: “The beauty of Discord is that it has everything you need all in one place. It is Discussions, Chat, Watch Party, Video tutorials, and Skype/Zoom all in one. Depending on the needs of a community, Discord can be tailored in almost any way possible.”

Q: I would like to join to have access to Viki-related stuff but I prefer not to socialise & spend much time chatting. Is it okay to join still?
A: Of course! Actually, we considered this at the very beginning so we created categories in the server, 2 main category being VCC and SOCIAL. If you prefer to keep it “business-only” and not to get carried in the chat, you can mute the whole social category and wouldn’t get any notification, while you can still have access to everything else.

Q: I want to join but I dont know anything about discord. What should I do?
A: You do not need any prior knowledge about discord to join this server! Nor does it take much time to learn the basics. You can go ahead and just simply create an account as you’d do on any other platform and join the server via the link above. You’ll find yourself in a welcome room with very simple steps to follow. And although we tried our best to keep things as simple as possible, you can tag a @ Discord Mod anytime, and ask for help. We have discord staff + language reps to help you out!

Q: Do I have to install discord?
A: No, not really. Personally, I use the app on the phone since it’s more convenient, however on the desktop I prefer using the website.

Q: How many people are there?
A: We have 310+ active members and still got people joining daily!

Q: I’m new to Viki. Can I join this server?
A: Of course! We love to help newbies to get to know more about Viki! We have many helpful people around so it definitely makes things easier, too!

Q: Is this server affiliated with Viki?
A: This is a server for volunteers created by volunteers. However, we have a few Viki staff on our server & in touch with our Discord staff, so I guess it is safe to say Viki is aware of our server. They also use this server to contact volunteers sometimes when they have new ideas & when they want to hear volunteers’ opinions.

These were some of the most asked questions I could think of. If you got any other questions… feel free to ask away!

As for updates:
-We made some adjustments on the #server-regulations.
-Updated channel-information since we created some new channels and merged some others.
-We have created a :birthday:birthdays channel to celebrate our members’ birthdays!
-We have created the ANNOUNCEMENTS section and we carried all the channels that are for similar purposes of announcing stuff under one category.
-We still need representatives for some languages, so open a ticket in :ambulance:discord-support to learn more about what this role involves and to apply! (we provide basic training for those who would be interested in this but are not familiar with discord/modding).

Have a great day/night everyone! :black_heart::purple_heart:

Hello everyone!~

It’s been a while since we last updated here, so here is a reminder that our discord server is still active and actually has been getting more and more crowded each day! We are so close to hitting 500 members!

We want to let you know that, experienced or newbies, all volunteers are welcome to join us! We are more than happy to offer assistance if you are new to discord. You can come in, take a look, stay if you like and leave if you dislike! We have an amazing team of discord staff & language representatives (for most of the languages) and we are here to help you out with the server/discord-related stuff. We also try our best to guide new volunteers to find teams to join! :hatching_chick:

You can use this link to join the server VIKI Contributor Community or if you are already using discord, you can click the “add a server” button and type the code SuEUz4Qb87 to join our server. Feel free to DM me if you have any problems!

Recently, our @dimghro had the great idea of bringing a very useful Discord feature to our server: Forums! We created two main forums for VCC (Viki Contributor Community) and for Off-topic chats, which allows us to keep everything even more organised and easy to keep up! Here you can read about the forums more in detail!

Looking forward to seeing you around. Take good care~

OMG. Last night I was complaining about how hard it is at times to connect with others in the community who are working on segging and subbing.

Wow. This could be a big game changer! Thanks for doing this!

You are more than welcome! With discussions and TD becoming more useless thanks to the banned words and suspended messages, it feels more useful to use another platform, i think. See you in the server!

So many new here on Discussions for the #seg-subtember so I want everyone to see that we have one more page that we connect with other volonteers on.

I might have visited this ^d i s c o r d page, but to me it’s just one more task to handle and pay attention. I’m quite happy just with this discussions feature since it’s on Viki in one place. I don’t think I want to invest more time in reading all the comments or access the page, working on project alone and visiting here fills my time. I find it a pity that folks are deviating to another platform whereas there is a platform already… and information and support are divided. :frowning:

I don’t think people would deviate too much to other platforms if the Discussions page was faultless. Personally, I experience errors on a daily basis here in Discussions, where I have to relaunch the browser for it to work properly. Small things like that is discouraging. And while I open Discussions every day and love reading everyone’s posts here, I never create my own topics because I’m always “anxious” I will create a topic that has already been mentioned before, even if I search beforehand. Although, I’m not unfamiliar with forum-like websites, I personally find this particular forum layout difficult to navigate. On the other platform, I have no such worries. Rather than seeing it as a division, I think of it as an alternative. There are people on the d i s c o r d that are active on both places! And then there might be people that wouldn’t be active on here, even without the other platform. So the other platform is another option for them to connect with the community

While I appreciate your honesty, I feel the opposite :frowning: Its sad dis.cord server seemed like an another task to you because it aims to do the opposite, to make things easier. Again, since we do not do any gatekeeping, i do not agree it is dividing the information, on the contrary, now we have around 600 members, many of whom regularly active and our announcement channels + viki-error informations helps the members to communicate and allow other members to help them if there is any method works for this errors.

On a side note, I feel like things often get super heated very easily on discussions and I feel there is lots of negativity and complaining about one another. I personally do not like the hostile attitude, which is why i usually read discussions everywhere but do not share my thoughts on this platform as much as did before. I feel it feels much better to interract my fellow volunteers in real time chat, but I get if it is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Wishing you a great day, take good care. <3

I suffer from the same! I also used forum-like platforms before but I feel that Discussions are quite chaotic to me. I kind of learned how to find my way around after all this time, but I still wish they improved many stuff (both discussions & viki in general) so all these people who devote their time here in return of nothing would have an easier time than it is now!

I’m also very happy to hear you do not feel anxious in our little server. I hope we can make it a safe and welcoming space for all volunteers :hatching_chick:

Have an amazing day, stay healty <3

For me Di.scord has made it easier to work with my team’s (as a Swedish moderator or a segger) I can send pictures and talk directly to the people I need to engage with. It feels so much more like I’m in the living room with friends and it’s in real time. I still love discussions and I’m here everyday day reading and sometimes commenting. I like that when I have a problem I can go to the di.scord and see that others have the same problem (Viki bug). As I said everything there is in real time and that’s sadly not the case on this page. And as Alina said the page is open and there’s no negative or badmouthing about others, if you did that you would be kicked out… So I’m really grateful that she created that space for us.
