When the subbers create content on the Viki website, the content becomes Viki’s property. To say it in detail, we still have the rights to our subs and we can use them in a non-commercial way, so we cannot share them to rival websites.
See the Terms of Use article 8 paragraph 3:
You retain all of your ownership rights in your Subtitle Submissions.
Rakuten Viki does not permit use of the Rakuten Viki Services for copyright infringing activities.
In article 11 it says:
11. PROHIBITED CONDUCT
- use the Rakuten Viki Services for any illegal purpose, or in violation of any local, state, national, or international law, including, without limitation, laws governing intellectual property and other proprietary rights, and data protection and privacy;
- use the Rakuten Viki Services for any commercial use, it being understood that the Rakuten Viki Services is for personal, non-commercial use only;
This, in simple words, means that, although we retain the intellectual property of our subs, we cannot use those subs to help websites which infringe copyright.
In the same way, Viki forbids us to copy paste subtitles from other websites
In the Terms of Use (article 8)
1> . You further agree that User Generated Content you submit to the Rakuten Viki Services will not contain third party copyrighted material, or material that is subject to other third-party proprietary rights, unless you have permission from the rightful owner of the material or you are otherwise legally entitled to post the material and to grant Rakuten Viki all of the license rights granted herein.
2. You further agree that you will not submit to the Rakuten Viki Services any User Generated Content or other material that is contrary to the Rakuten Viki Community, applicable local, national, and international laws and regulations.
The same is said, in a different way, in the Volunteer Guidelines:
No inappropriate subtitling, which may include but is not limited to:
- Copying subtitles from a non-Viki source
In reality, all dramas and films are intellectual property of a TV-station or entertainment production company. Hence it is illegal to stream, download and share them without payment. Regardless of whether a particular video or genre is popular or not in one of the world’s countries.
Because these sites make money from advertisement (and from premium subscriptions to remove ads), using a content (the videos) they haven’t paid. Just as Viki and other legal streaming sites make money from advertisement (and for subscriptions to remove ads), but pays licenses for that.
You really haven’t taken the time to go to Help Center and read Guidelines, have you? It’s written multiple times.
