Any music nerds on here? I’m looking for some new recommendations. Something harder than most of the stuff posted here. Looking for interesting sounds/noises, musical genre fusions, with a catchy beat that will shake my butt or bang my head. Something that changes up or crescendos during the song. Vocals should be one of the instruments of the music. I’m not interested in soft, melodious, singer-songwriter, consistent or repetitive stuff (but also not interested in death metal or rap). And absolutely no auto-tune. Looking for some unique sounds yet danceable Asian pop. I can also sometimes be swayed by some fun lyrics or hot dance videos, but the music has to pull its weight.
Looking forward to seeing what is recommended. Thanks in advance!
stalkingbeans, so… harder, interesting sounds, fusions, something that changes up, unique sounds… Have you heard Soko ni Naru (Sound in There)? Check out “Tenohira de Odoru” (Dancing in the Palm of a Hand):
I’m not in philosophical agreement with the lyrics, but this tune about knocked me right out of my chair the first time I saw and heard it.
Another that’s jaw-dropping is “Gou ni Moyu” (which is either “Fuel Production” or “Burning With Business,” depending on which translation app you ask.) Sounds like a normal, semi-Disco-ish groove, then after the 22 second mark all hell breaks loose:
Oh geez, I guess it’s easy to overlook the obvious but…
Then there’s my namesake, the 'Labbits. If you’re not familiar, suffice it to say their 2003 “Clutch” album still ranks in my all-time Top 5. Have a taste of “Monologue” (from the '07 “Soup” album) - a great tune and maybe one of the most stunning vids I’ve ever seen. I call it “Donnie Darko minus the light, scattered jet engine showers”:
“Clutch’s” second track, “Mushroom Cat Number Plate,” never fails to put a smile on my face - a progression that just never stops turning corners (a pity the full CG vid is no longer posted):
They broke up abruptly in 2017 just after their “Her” album release, Uki-chan and drummer Mah started the short-lived band Muvidat - “Fog Lights” in particular was seriously cool:
And now they’ve re-formed the 'Labbits with two new members. Hopefully they’re hammering out a new album because I lovelovelove the 'Labbits - maybe as much as Rush and UFO and Frank Marino, my usual “life soundtrack” material.
And just don’t get me started on Tears of Tragedy - Haruka’s voice is like a Stradivarius, Toru’s melodic flourishes on guitar remind me of Uli Roth, and… hot on the heels of “Wonder Arts” they’re releasing a new tune this Saturday (the 7th)! Encyclopedia Metallum says the title will be “Spectrize.”
Rock!
Interesting! I appreciate what they are doing. It’s very Trans-Siberian Orchestra meets metal. Definitely ticks some boxes. Thanks for sharing
Very 90s alternative rock. Can’t go wrong with classics! No, I have not heard of any of these before. These are a little less on target for my current musical cravings, but I will probably share these with other people. I appreciate the rec’s!
@shakalabbit
Oh, ya, the Soko ni Naru songs reminded me of “Jishu” by Roce (also sometimes spelled Rosu), but more piano-y:
