Dussehra is a festival marking Lord Rama killing demon king Ravana. Have you heard about Ramayan, one of the largest epics in Hindu mythology?
Dussehra itself means killing of the ten headed since Ravana had ten heads. He was killed in a battle because he kidnapped Goddess Sita (Rama’s wife) when they were in their 14 year exile.

It is a festival celebrated on the death of ravan ( the bad guy) in the Indian history and it was a big win henceforth people celebrated it and spread wishes for this happy moment .

usually there’s not much celebrations for dussehra 
here in my region . it is celebrated more vastly in the north india .

not eXACTLY… Diwali has a huger celebration and we don’t get Dussehra vacations, we get Diwali vacations.
