Why does the cynic in me think this is just to make sure an influential segment of the Viki community keeps subscribing?
The article below from the Rakuten.Today (November 2020) says," In the first half of 2020, Viki enjoyed growth of over 50% in its subscription business, surpassing 15 million monthly active users among more than 32 million registered. User-curated collections, reviews, fan forums, timed comments and crowdsourced subtitles all contribute to the site’s strong sense of community — something users say keeps them coming back."

It was once estimated that those identifying as exclusively homosexual made up 10% of the U.S. population, and for years that figure was used to promote a “non-binary” political agenda. However, the actual percentage is probably around 4%.

4% of 15,000,000 active subscribers is 600,000. Even if that number of users is only paying the basic monthly subscription rate, the total amount they pay EACH MONTH is $2,994,000 US.
I would be inclined to see Rakuten Viki as truly making a bold social and cultural move regarding the LGBT+ community if all the information about Viki embracing that community and being cutting edge and increasingly popular and cool and relevant did NOT seem to be coming out of Rakuten Viki’s own public relations office AND if such information was published in social media in other parts of the world as well.
Not going to find this on Weibo as well, are we?
Not going to see this featured in social media in the United Arab Emirates, right?
Viki active users will wait in vain for the day the owner, CEO, COO, and Board of Directors of Rakuten Viki fly from Tokyo HQ to be grand marshals in a summer gay pride parade in San Francisco or Los Angeles.
They will wait in vain for Viki to show solidarity by holding a contest in which 200 winning LGBT+ Viki active users are flown to Tokyo and treated to a week of sightseeing, fine dining, and photo ops with Viki chaebols and their families.
