Totally understand. I think just some things need changes and adjustment. Like I mention, there’s a lot of shows, enough for whole community to at least got one show a year as cm, an try their forces in this field. I hope staff will see a bigger picture, and with time change, because this will be fair and clear.
I think a lot of people, including myself, think the same as you do. I find it a bit discouraging being a contributor at this point, and ive seen many give up and just disappear, because viki drives this whole community to the ground. Its fantastic that people are getting a shot being a CM, but being one almost every month? Yeah, it does make one question whats happening.
I want to add, some of us have been here since the beginning or for many years. Most of us have CM’d many channels before these “rules” came about. My concern is the CM training they mentioned, but I feel has completely gone into hiding in some dark cave. Most don’t know where they land as a CM. Even though I agree with CM training and CMs shadowing, there has to be another way to go about this. And the fact that many of us have experience as CMs, but Viki has deemed us of no value to their market. Most of us “oldies” were very active as CMs. As my husband and I have talked about this before, it’s like the Amzn effect. Not the forest but the company. Once you have worked there for years, they will fire you or make it hard for you to stay, so you quit on your own. Why? Because they can easily train someone for less to do what you do. Viki, to me, is the same. They hope to get all these new, younger souls whom they can mold as they see fit. While most of us were on Viki waaaaaaaaaaaaaay before Rakuten became the owner. So, we do Viki differently and are harder to mold in their likeness.
True. Viki has changed drastically over the years. It’s hard for me to say whether it’s for the better. The choice of CMs is rather obvious, as the same people constantly get the position. It’s not their fault so no hate, because Viki Staff chooses them, but you have to apply yourself for this role after all. However, as I mentioned still final call, is the Viki staff voice. Although the fact that some people have not had the opportunity to develop for years, while others get it from two or three times a month, is quite a specific form of development and opportunity, if I may say so. Because to an outside observer, some people have the opportunity to develop, while the rest are blocked in a way. Someone gets something occasionally, while others nothing, and the circle closes. That’s life. Many, many of the old staff I knew have left, but Viki doesn’t seem to mind, since a lot of new people have joined. The company work that way after all. So I wouldn’t count on any changes. I guess you just have to grit your teeth and keep going, or say goodbye.
Hi everyone!
Once again, I think a new approach should be implemented in choosing a manager.
RECOMMENDATION
A Vikier can only be a manager…
Of Korean titles, ONCE
Of Chinese titles ONCE
and of Japanese titles ONCE in a WHOLE YEAR.
So to sum up, you can only be a manager 3 times at most in case you like either Korean, Chinese or Japanese.
Wouldn’t that give a chance to everyone?
I do hope Viki ensures a more inclusive and community-oriented environment to all of us!
Hang in there, (if you haven’t left us already
)
I don’t agree. If you put a limit of 3 per year, the nationality shouldn’t be an issue. Some of us just like dramas from one country only, and we have somehow “specialized”, knowing the right people to enlist for that country.
I suggest a maximum of 2-3 dramas, no matter from where. But I suggest we don’t only count number of dramas but also number of episodes.
For instance Chinese dramas are usually more than 30 episodes whereas Korean ones 16 or even only 12; and there are some mini-dramas that are only 6 episodes long.
As a general rule we could say no more than 3 short or 2 long dramas.
And there are films as well, how do you count those? If we go by length, a film counts as 2 drama episodes (therefore 8 films = 1 drama).
But there are already volunteers who had more than 5 channels or are close to 5 and will still get more while others don’t get any. This is the prob which should be handled.
If we just put everyone who got one or more channels in the past year into “quaranteen” and then just select CMs from who’s left for a year, we’ll get a more balanced situation. After that, the other CMs can come out of their quaranteen and with restriction on the amount channels, we can then have a more fair selection.
Even if they come up with new rules to limit channels, Viki put this into their guidelines as well:
Source: https://contributorhelp.viki.com/hc/en-us/articles/28309001320339-How-are-Channel-Managers-selected
So the people they favoritize can still get way more channels than the allowed number of channels…
There is a higher demand to be a CM for Korean dramas, and an inadvertent prestige that comes with it. In addition, there are fewer K-dramas being licensed to Viki than Chinese. So, I would agree with @marykarmelina, as this approach would limit annual double or triple CM-ship on exclusively K-dramas.
Ah, their last point irritates me to bits! The entire message speaks: “Those who obey us blindly will have extra channels per year”.
Rules are not set in stone. Obviously, this part needs to be revised, as well.
Discouraging, disappointing and sad for other volunteers who could also do a good job
Exactly. I don’t know what is they so called “criteria” to have more cm one after another , because looking at it some people are packed with drama above limit and still got like 2-3 in a row. As I mention no hate to people, staff is making a choice, but again You need to apply. Now it’s like a round circle based on they favorize rules, and some got constantly channels, some got nothing. Viki have many dramas so I think everyone should have a chance. Im always happy for a channel that my friends got, still It would be nice to have some once in a while. I wrote to help center but the only reply I got is that I should contact “primary contacts” that I think splits cms to other users, and mention that I wasn’t in some time like they called it “gentle follow-up message”. I did it, tho nothing happened or change. So I guess apply again on what interested me, and wait maybe next or next year I will got something, but I totally agree it’s “Discouraging, disappointing and sad for other volunteers” great sumary.
Yes, and the yearly limit is actually not two or three times, which we were debating among ourselves right now, but SIX.
Got the same mail weeeeeeks ago. And if one person chooses you can clearly see he don’t care, doesn’t look who has anything at the moment… or maybe for one person it is to much workload.
And if you reach out to him, you won’t get an answer.
Maybe I shoot myself also in the knew with this, but it’s my experience…
