I recently started watching A Splendid Match. It’s a wonderful drama. My problem is keeping up with who is related to whom and who holds what position (and why that position is important).
I figured out eventually that the term “Matriarch” is the formal way people address the grandmothers in the story. I also figured out that cousins can be called brother or sister. Otherwise, keeping relationships straight is giving me a headache.
In addition, knowing very little about ancient Chinese politics, I am clueless about different departments, bureaus, offices, etc.
I also don’t know why certain documents are called memorials. In modern English, a memorial is a statue or other object that exists to remind people of someone who has been dead a long time. This is clearly not the case in a Splendid Match, but I don’t know what the term really means.
I see that there is a relationship “cheat sheet” in Chinese. It’s very visual and helpful.
Are there any cheat sheets related to politics or any lists of English vocabulary words used to translate slightly unusual Chinese words?
