This is annoying, when I want to watch a drama now, say, Martial Universe, I get told I need to turn my adblocker off, or get vikipass, I do not have the means to get vikipass, and I used to be able to easily watch Martiual Universe with adblocker for a smooth ad free experience
But now I am being told I MUST turn my adblocker off, OR get Vikipass standard, Now, I WOULD get viki pass standard, if it were free.
Honestly I thought just sighning up for this site meant vikipass standard ? Is this not the case ?
If annoying or not, Viki does not run only from the love of drama fans.
It needs money to run the business. Yes, it is a business not charity, I am sorry to say it this clearly.
Is signing in at Viki and creating a profile getting you a pass? No.
There are several ways to get a pass.
To pay for it.
To do volunteer jobs, like subtitling or segmenting
Why Viki doesn’t want you to turn off add blockers, because if you do not pay for a pass, they need to get money in a different way. That means by the firms paying for placing ads.
So either you are happy that companies are paying for their ad placements so you can watch drama without spending money or you need to find another way to watch Viki without advertisements. Volunteering can get time-consuming and needs knowledge either in languages or segmenting.
I’ll have to disagree with you. If it weren’t for the ads, so many people, who can’t afford Viki Pass for any reason, wouldn’t be able to enjoy dramas. Viki purchases licences for dramas with two sources of money. People who pay a monthly subscription, and from people who wish to show their ads on Viki. If you pay, then you don’t need to see the ads. If you don’t pay, then you’ll have to stick with the other option, which is to watch the ads. You can think of it as that these ads are the ones who pay for you to watch for free what isn’t actually free.
Personally, I am happy this website has this system. I personally do not buy such things. If it weren’t for the ads, I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy all the dramas I enjoyed before becoming a volunteer. I also wouldn’t have been able to recommend dramas and discuss dramas with my friends who can’t buy a pass and are watching the dramas for free on viki as well. Other websites make you pay to enjoy watching. And that excludes a big part of viewers who do not own passes for any reason.
And frankly, if everyone used an ad-blocker like you, placing ads on this website will not be worth it for advertisers anymore. And they would stop placing ads. After that, the only way to watch will have to be paying for a pass. So I can’t really agree with you that ads are bad. Ads are the reason you can watch in the first place.
If you don’t like the ads and don’t want to buy a pass, you can join our volunteer community and get a free one as a thank you for your contributions to this website. You can contribute in a couple of ways depending on your abilities and knowledge.
I am sorry if I was a bit too frank but the truth is the truth.
You need to read the information yourself and make the decision yourself if you want to be a volunteer.
I can’t give you information how the training program for segmenters is working these days, if the waiting list is still as long. You will need to make some effort to contact the mentioned people.
I am not a segmenter, therefore I am not the best for giving advice in that field.
Read the information on the help page first and then try to find the right people to get started, if you want to.
