Is swearing allowed while subbing a drama?

I think it depends on what the swear word is. Here in The Netherlands is confusing, sometimes they bleep things and sometimes they don’t. I think that’s due personal taste. For some swear words I think it’s ok but for others it’s best to sensor a little because there might be young people watching. But then I think of my dad who was watching a gangster series last week and if they would have used sensor in there they could bleep whole dialogues. What approach do you prefer when translating swear words?

It’s not only personal preference. Viki policy is that we tone-down swearing in dramas but leave it as is in films. So that’s what I do. In dramas, many people just resort to punk or jerk, but punk sounds ridiculous in historicals. And I’m trying to find out alternatives, so that it doesn’t become boring. Censored subtitles that affect the watching experience

On the contrary, as a Korean-English subber, I typically see subbers using much harsher curse words in English than what is actually said in Korean. I think that’s because most subbers don’t actually know what those cuss words mean and they are just using the most common cuss words in English, such as btch, SOB, fck, etc. As for me, I try to come up with the closest equivalent cuss words.
