Do ultra-wide screens mean anything to you (18:9 ratio)?

Hello,

I’m not going to go into any technical details. I would simply like to know if anyone has or cares about 18:9 ultra-wide mobile devices. It would be nice to have a pinch-to-zoom feature to avoid the lateral black borders. It’s been added on YouTube, but again the audience is very different. I’m just curious. Thank you!

Ultra-wide screens? This reminds me of Cinerama. Someone said, at the time, that they are good for showing funeral processions and snakes.

Not really. It refers to the so-called “bezel-less” smartphones that we’ve been seeing in the last 2 years. Hopefully, all screens will be produced with this aspect ratio in mind.

Unlike standard screens that you would see in a laptop or TV or older smartphone, the 18:9 ratio was designed by a very smart person who imagined a future where people would stop going to the cinema theatre and start watching movies on their personal electronic devices. Does that sound familiar?

Movies have always been made for cinema theatres first and foremost. This is why DVDs have those unsightly top and bottom black borders.
Nowadays, most people consume media on their smart device, so it’s only natural to create a screen size that would perfectly fit the movies that once upon a time were exclusive to the silver screen.

Also, it allows for true panoramic photos, like the one I took this morning. Sadly, Viki doesn’t support the format.
