I hate it when we don’t get notified. I used to seg and sub quite a few music channels and I worked on 49 Days, Paradise Ranch and a few other Kdrama and one day I suddenly noticed those channels where gone. So I PMed Viki staff since I also noticed my seg and sub count hardly went up for a few weeks while I made like 100 segs a day at least. They told me your contributions for deleted channels will remain counted but now I’m not so sure…
I believe that to be true. I still have numbers for shows long gone, but I could care less about that.
I changed my avatar and it changed my username here in Discussions, adding the 1 to the end of it.
The work I am referring to is that of all of the translators … a tremendous amount of work.
Wow, I am so sad to hear that so many subbers/segmenters and others who work so hard on this are becoming less motivated. You guys are the reasons we are able to see any of this content. When I began Kdramas there was no where to go for translations. The viewers really do appreciate your hard work!. Viki needs to rethink this policy as a whole, I realize that it is expensive to archive video but there are new fans everyday who want to see old and new dramas. Also, the work that is put into doing this for everyone on a volunteer basis needs to be considered. There has to be a way for them to respect viewers wishes on these shows.
Also, if they can tell us when these are expiring, I would think they would tell us when they are getting some of dramas we are waiting for.
The problem is that our “pay” for volunteering is our subs being displayed to the public. The viki pass is just an extra but I do it for my subs being available. If I know that they get deleted at one point (which I didn’t know before though I should have tried to find out) I don’t feel like volunteering anymore because then everything I do is in vain. Especially since I am not subbing in English which is viewed by many people but in another language. So it even more feels like I am doing it for nothing in the end…
But I guess it’s also my fault for not finding out about that before I started volunteering.
Also I am the person who wants to rewatch shows from time to time. Then I will just have to go and illegially watch them since they will disappear from viki at one point…
@lacruiser1 I don’t see some channels in my contributors list, that’s why I also keep a list on my profile istelf (which I really need to update since I didn’t go that in a few months…oops)
I just passed the 100,000 segs last monday and I will be really upset if all of a sudden half of my projects expire so my seg count drops and I can start all over again since it looks as if I never had so many.
While I do show credit from some shows no longer around, there is one show from years ago which no longer shows up, The Great King Sejong. We were half way through the 100 episodes when they stopped us.
I feel the same way. Had I known this would happen I would subtitle dramas on another network. I’m not involved in any of the dramas mentioned but I’m a fan of almost half of the dramas on that list and go re-watch them from time to time, so this is really upsetting for me too, and I know eventually my projects will be on that list.
If volunteering doesn’t help and our hardwork will get removed just like that, then what’s the point? It’s just a waste of our efforts honestly.
I know it is disappointing to see our work basically just thrown away, but that’s the way it is in the internet world. I have worked in the Silicon Valley for over 20 years and I can’t tell you the number of times my work of many months was just–well–gone. Various reasons:
-
The product was never released to the public or the client.
-
The user interface changed drastically making my work outdated.
-
The product was updated frequently (weekly, every six weeks, etc.) so my work was overwritten by the next version.
Of course, I always made sure I got paid, regardless.
I like writing subtitles because I get something out of it. I meet interesting people, get to work on my language skills, and really get involved in the writing, characters, and acting of the dramas I sub.
I have yet to finish The Jewel in the Palace, so I guess I will have to work on that one over the next few months.
Channel Manager for Jewel in the Palace said that it will expire in May so you still have some time left to watch it. It really is an awesome drama so you should definitely watch it. At least all my work won’t go on total waste then.
Dong Yi and Bridal Mask are great as well.
I’m going to change my icon as well. it’s heartbreaking that there is a point where our work is all voided. I just hope viki is trying hard to get the dramas relicensed knowing that this is not right. I miss the old viki. This is a big heartbreak to me.
Bridal Mask was the one drama I remember when just finding subbers willing to sub was just crucial. Sooo heartbreaking!
I remember getting SOS for it but I was too busy subbing either Dr. Jin or Gentlemen’s dignity or something else that I couldn’t help out. But they will all be lost anyway.
For the ones who also still need to watch (or want to rewatch) Jewel in the palace, Dong Yi and The Great Queen Seon Deok, you have till May 20. Viki is trying to extend them and I was told they will let me know if that happens.
I hope they can extend most Kdrama licenses since the lists contains to much classics which are a must watch and too many of my favorites.
YAY! Thank You for that information. I really hope they all get relicensed
Gee, I guess it must be my difficulty with the language. I don’t see that comment at all in the statement that I received from them:
“Unfortunately, our licenses for these titles is coming to an end, and they will expire between 5/20-5/29. Please reach out to your respective Channel teams and let them know.”
We’ll see…
We just have to wait and see. viki has 5 months to work on it. if they work hard it will happen,
I find it stupid that it’s only send to the CM’s of those channels but that may just be me.
You’re not alone. It should be posted on the front page.
Like I said, I have been pushing for years for them to provide the lease info. Originally I wanted to be able to add it to the channel home page with the areas licensed. With no progress there I asked them to put it somewhere not visible to the viewers but view able to the CM. They still haven’t done that either. In fairness lately they did let me know that a few were to be re-negotiated next year.
I don’t think they want to have to let people know that a license is being lost as if it is a weakness on their part or something so they have to weigh the effect of when and who they tell. I know that the last time when I had one lost and wasn’t told until they finally answered my request to know what is wrong with the channel, that was infuriating.
This time I am mostly upset by what they are losing. Many good shows that a lot of work was put into. Some classics.
Of the 24 shows on their list, 20 of them are listed on DF (all but Couple Fantasy, Kimcheed Radish, I love You, Don’t Cry and Kanna’s Big Success).
Out of the 24, 14 are listed on SoompiTV including the ones not on DF plus Queen of Housewives, Assorted Gems, Kim Sam Soon, Gentleman’s Dignity, I Do, IDo and Ghost.
So it will be interesting to see if the other sites lose any of these dramas, particulary Damo, Jewel, Dong Yi and Queen Seon Deok.
