Hairpieces in dramas

I haven’t seen this so thought I would ask. the Queens, princesses that wear those wigs in various dramas,

Did they in those times wear those wigs?
if so how much did they weigh, they do look heavy,
did someone help them with those hairpieces or did they have to do it themselves, and was it a sect type thing?

They wore wigs, the wigs were heavy and they had maids.
