How to balance between contribution in Viki and real life

Before making this topic, I already looked at the research of some outstanding Viki members. They are just normal like anyone else, but their contributions are more than thousands. I really adore them a lot. How can they have time to do a lot of projects? Can you guys share your own experiences?

Being in a subbing team requires a lot of free time, depending on the popularity of the drama you’re working on. For exemple, for Hwarang the demand is huge (to the point we’re getting private messages from impatient fans literally 5 minutes after the upload) so you have to be here when it’s uploaded/done segmenting. And also on how much you like the drama. For me, the drama I was the most active on was Moorim School, I would always refresh the page once it was uploaded to be here and have a part to sub in english, I would stay up all night because I was in Korea when it was airing, so it was uploaded quite late at night. I would go back around noon to see if some segments needed filling up. More than that, I was also the french moderator and french editor. Required three time more efforts ><
For me, since I don’t have any trouble with my studies and live right next to my university, I can go straight home and work on my projects. Also, since I end classes at 5pm my time it’s around the time when the episodes are uploaded, so it all works out for me.
I have to be honest, when I first started on viki, I was subbing in class because I loved it so much!
Once you’re used to the pace of everything, you can start taking more than one project at a time.
During summer break this year, I probably had 6 projects at the same time because I had A LOT of time to spare, so instead of not doing anything, I just spent my time on viki.

And by the way @marygrether1_gmail_c I think she said project as in the people who subbed the dramas ^^

Under your post there are some icons. For edit, etc. Where you see the three periods (…), if you click on it, other icons appear. One is a garbage bin. If you click on this garbage bin it will ask you if you want to delete your message. You reply yes and it’s done (it will be deleted after 24 hours).

By the way I’m also an avid crocheter and sewer, but of course I can crochet (simple things where you don’t need to really look) only while watching, not while subtitling or editing…

I prefer doing subs in the evening, and checking updates in the mornings, then communicating via kkt during the day I used to do sewing, knitting a bit crochet as well, I still hope to use all the wool I have  Now busy with fixing up the house. I used to write more frequently and often (hours long) subs in past but got cramping in my hands and since working in yard during spring and fall that was too much for my hands. Taking breaks it’s so important and stretching just as well. If I had to give all that up, I would truly miss the community and friendship I do enjoy with a large circle of Vikians :sob:

Well it can be hard to balance it every time your real life situation changes a bit. I was jobless for a while and after I finally found work again I felt a bit guilty that I couldn’t help as much and was segging even though I was tired after a long day at work. But now I’m finally ok to just take a lil break from volunteering more often when I’m too tired. Also I don’t segment late in the evenings because then I can’t sleep well.

What I do now is focus on one project a day (if I have one) and all else is extra… But now I usually have 1 or 2 projects a day. Sometimes 3 if it overlaps. Sometimes it happens that I didn’t even volunteer once at a project I signed up for so I try to find a new balance in that so every project does get some attention from me.

And most people around me know about it so if someone asks if I would like to go to the shopping centre with them while I’m still busy on Viki I just say give me 20 minutes I’m almost done. No big deal.

Real life comes first at all times! People can wait on Viki and if they can’t they should help out themselves.

@itsjoo don’t let those PM’s bother you, just delete or when they are insulting or attacks report to Viki. And yeah when I was jobless I sometimes had 4-5 projects a day plus side projects for when all my main projects where done. Looking back at it I think I was absolutely crazy but at that time I felt bored and useless so Viki was a way to kill boredom and to feel needed.

I’m not finding it hard. I’m not contributing that much, though.

At some point, I could do two episodes per day for weeks. Other times, I didn’t even have time to log in or watch a drama, let alone sub it. I also tend to favor real life. If I don’t work on an episode, somebody else will. If I don’t work/meet my friends/clean my house/take care of matters, nobody will.

I think people should know their limits. If I have x amount hours a day for myself, I must draw a line on how much of it I spend for hobbies. Therefore, I can’t promise x amount hours of my time, nor should I try to deliver them. I often break that promise, but life is always there to correct me.

Ohh my previous post may look like I spend all my free time on Viki but I’m not. Next to volunteering and watching things on Viki I also have other things to do and hobby’s in my free time. 2 days ago I started with diamond painting and I want to pick up crocheting again soon too. My friend is totally into that and makes the cutest things but all I did so far is making a smiling donut :stuck_out_tongue:
