I’ve been curious about this for a while now. I don’t understand the language, so they all seem great to me. But are they really? You just can’t tell when you don’t understand what they are saying.
Or are there any standout absolutely dreadful ones?

You should form you own opinion. Who is “good” is subjective. Watch and decide for yourself. Hope this helps.
Even if you don’t understand the language and you rely on subtitles like most of us here, you can get their acting by the body language and face expressions.
My opinion: You cannot bundle all singers and models into one rule. Some of singers and models became excellent actors (Lee Jong-suk and Junho come to mind) but there are some others who cannot act to save their lives. So I am never prejudiced, I first want to watch them to form an opinion.
The third lead in a drama will often be a music star who is being given a try out in a drama. You can spot them because they are a bit limited, but then they improve.
Jang Ki-Yong started out as model, then even did hip hop, but since then, he has gone from strength to strength as a powerful actor in My Mister. Meanwhile, there’s Cha Hak-Yeon in ‘Oh my ghost clients’ who came out of a boy band. Not a bad effort in the acting stages. He had appeal, let’s say. Oh, and he does have a remarkable voice. Great singing technique.
I don’t think I worded this very well. I love all the actors I watch, regardless of whether they are models/singers etc. I just wondered if there were people out there who are either Korean or understand the language, that think to themselves “how on earth did they get cast in this”.
It varies. So Ji Sub is a really good actor. Just his facial expressions tell you a lot. The majority of meaning of language is understood through context, facial expressions and body language. So subtitles make most things fairly clear. I rewatch K dramas and often pick up much more understanding on the 3rd rewatch. Often the subtitles are a bit crude and it takes several rewatches to pick up the nuances. Also finding out more about the culture helps . The subservience, the need to allow for saving face etc all affect how various relationships operate.
Some models are a bit ‘wooden’ - I assumed picked for their looks? I assume if they don’t improve they don’t get cast??
