Japanese Historical Dramas

Japanese Historical Dramas: do they exist? If they do, why Viki doesn’t buy them? Just to add something very exotic and new to Viki’s dramas range (and something hard to find elsewhere in several languages).
I remember (ages ago, with Lone Wolf and Cub) they were my first “oriental” love.
Please, Viki, look into them

They do exist, even on Viki:

Last summer, I translated the second one appeared on Viki (it was A Calm Sea and Beatiful Days With you - hopefully there will be the second season this Autumn). I mean, HOW MANY Historical Chinese/Korean dramas are on Viki compared to Japanese ones? I want more, and you?

Absolutely! I thought Shinsengumi was a start, but it sure has been a while…

They do exist, the most popular ones are the public broadcaster NHK’s taiga dramas that have an average of 45-minute 45 episodes that air for a year. Being chosen as a main lead in a taiga is an honor amongst actors and gives you immediate recognition across Japan. Of course, many of them are already respected actors but being part of a taiga or asadora (NHK’s morning series) is a highlight in their careers.

They do exist, but no for us :frowning:

Other networks also produce jidaigeki (period dramas) but unlike cdramas or kdramas, they mostly aren’t focused on romance, and are more grounded and realistic, of course with fictional elements for plot purposes.

Look into Ooku and its several versions, Jin (time travel to Edo period, it’s on ■■■■■■■), the upcoming Chiruran (on HBO), the Rurouni Kenshin movies (■■■■■■■), Last Samurai Standing (■■■■■■■).

Fun fact: Chiruran is another version of Shinsengumi: With You I Bloom. The shinsengumi was a real police squad that existed in the 19th century led by Kondou Isami, and most of the characters you see in Shinsengumi were real. Of course, the version Viki has of Shinsengumi is heavily fictionalized and sugarcoated. Japan has produced many Shinsengumi versions and they focus on the historical aspect, and the upcoming Chiruran seems to follow that path.

Lol why is N T F L X censored.

I’d like more, too! It does make me wonder why Rakuten Viki, owned by the Japanese technology conglomerate Rakuten Group, Inc., is not able to or does not want to secure more licensing rights for historical/period dramas like Jidaigeki (時代劇), Taiga (大河劇), and the likes.

Perhaps with more voices out here, they’ll listen and try? Hopefully.
 :muscle: :jp:

It might have to do with the alleged fact that Japan is very picky with which of its content it is willing to send abroad and which not.

All Viki’s rivals are censored here. It’s in Viki’s best interest that no one knows that those other streaming sites exist.

I wouldn’t say picky. Japan’s copyright laws are strict, and they’ve always looked inwards catering mostly to their own audience than the global market. Until a few years ago, they weren’t much interested in exporting their dramas.

Now sites like Pr i me Vi deo with a small Jdrama selection, or N T Flix that has a lot more variety genre wise and has been adding 4-5 currently-airing dramas every season (Japan divides its drama broadcast in four seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter), and the number of Jdramas produced by Net floxx has been increasing.

Here is a list of period/historical dramas from Japan that I found on MyDramaList.

I can’t find the ‘new’ link for Viki’s official request form.
If someone could share the link it would be appreciated.
