Shine on Me

Has anyone watched this drama? I am finding it difficult to follow. Are there anyone willing to help answer questions about the drama?

What questions do you have?

Why her family didn’t visit her in hospital even though she was in hospital for so long?

Why her emotions are so strong and deep with the SML even though they never dated or spend together alone?

Her parents don’t know she’s in the hospital. That’s why they don’t visit her.

She meets him during her time at university or shortly before, and confesses her love to him at university, but he does not react as she had hoped. It later turns out that he would have reacted differently if there had not been rumors (I won’t say exactly what happened because of spoilers). She tells him that she will wait for him because she thinks he is just not ready yet.
After that, she learns from a fellow student that she is interested in him. They have known each other since childhood and grew up together. She then distances herself from him and does not try to become his girlfriend. Several things happen that originate from this fellow student and continue to complicate the situation between SML and her.

Did that answer your questions? If not, please get back in touch.

Your explanation is clear. But the logic behind the characters in the drama doesn’t make sense to me. How can you feel so uncomfortable with seeing another person who you never dated or spend time alone together. May be they did in the novel but not in the TV drama. Thanks for reply.

Hello dear… the FL fell in love with the SML in her college years but the FL comes from a very influential family ( meaning rich ) and sml comes from a poor family. Even though he does like her he also looked down on her for being rich and always made crude or snide remarks about her advantage of having money and family to rely on. The FL is very down to earth and would rather work hard than depends on her family for anything . Her family dotes on her and she is very kind and respectful .The FL did things to show the SML that even without her family help she can still get the jobs she applied for , relying on her own strength . The SML has ties to her college classmate who made her think she wasn’t into him and which led her to confess to the SML after which she was faced with numerous rumours about her trying to steal her friend’s boyfriend. Due to the scheming roommate ( who is by the way a childhood friend of the sml and is in love with him ) twisted lies and words forced the sml to do and say hurtful things to the FL . Sometimes young love don’t always be the right love . The FL confused herself with a crush over love. Which led up to her doubting her self worth and having to take a leap of faith and try again slowly getting to know her real love the ML. Which btw is way more better. I hope this explains more for you.

I’m not sure if get the question right… But isn’t that the case almost in all Asian dramas?

E.g. boy has a crush on a girl that he has never known or talked to. Girl only knows the boy as quiet and shy, not so wealthy next door neighbor, never spoke to him.
Fast forward 10 years - the boy is now successful, handsome man and has always loved the girl next door. He has never ever had any relationship with other women, bc he is so in love with that one girl. Then he meets THE girl in some work related thing and BOOM, it’s on… Aaaaaaand 25 episodes later after many, many misunderstandings and chaos they kiss aaaaaand 10 episodes later they are married. And that’s all because the boy felt so strongly about this girl he didn’t even spent time with.

So I don’t see anything weird in Shine on Me or I didn’t understant the question :woman_shrugging:t2:

Yes, definitely a trope. Her infatuation with the SML / her crush on him is something I’ve seen happen in real life as well. The FL even knows that her crush isn’t rational, but she “can’t help but feel that way.”

Basically, she fell for him at first sight / the idea she had of him. Some people don’t need to spend time alone with someone to catch feelings for them :woman_shrugging:

Considering all the rumors it’s not that weird (like above comments have explained). She doesn’t want to get labelled as coming between the SML and her roommate again, so she’d rather avoid him like the plague. Why would she risk damaging her friendship with her roommates? (She can ignore Rong & Siliang, but she does care about the rest).

She also wants to quiet the feelings she has for SML and not let them get stronger.
Avoidance seems like the best option for her.

Didn’t the FL say that she would give up if the SML had a girlfriend? When the FL texted the SML asking if he had a girlfriend, the SML by not replying indicated that the SML was taken and in a relationship. I don’t understand why the SML was upset with the FL who said she will continue liking the SML until the SML changed his mind. The SML basically, by not replying to the FL text, that he was taken. Why would the FL continue to pursue the SML unless the FL was someone who doesn’t mind pursuing guys with girlfriends?

The trope and the Asian drama reference only applies to childhood connections and not usually to university meetings. That sort of connection is more to do with concepts similar ot Karma.

Probably has something to do with what Rong told him about the FL, causing him to misunderstand her intentions.

She didn’t continue pursuing him, that’s why she started avoiding him. She can’t help how she feels about him however, and is sometimes pulled by those feelings, only to be reminded that he is already taken. That’s why I said:

It’s just taking her a long time to get over it. Not sure if it’s her first crush, although, that would explain a lot.

The misunderstandings are just frustrating and both FL and SML need to learn to voice their feelings. At least ML is voicing his feeling out loud, even though he also needs to clear up a misunderstanding.

I started rewatching the earlier episodes again after completing the later episodes and I have to say, it makes more sense why they behaved in a particular way or said certain things

Good .
I think this show ended well.
It was funny seeing how much hate the SML got, especially on MDL .

The SML reminds me of the relationship between Mu Chen and Xiao Mi in Heart Signal 7 Chinese version. Mu-Chen was not completely honest with himself and Xiao-Mi which created misunderstanding. Even though Xiao-Mi liked Mu-Chen at the beginning, once the opportunity was not taken, it was gone forever. In many ways, this is what happened to the SML and the FL.
