I think this demonstrates why it is so important for translators to truly understand not only the target audience’s language but also its culture in order to provide good subtitles. This is why, although it may be annoying to my fellow translators, I try to take my time to understand the context before I translate any material.

Absolutely.
This brings to mind a common saying: “Haste makes waste”, where “haste” is “being hasty” and hence, without sufficient consideration.
PS: It looks like there may be “paid opportunities” for K-E translators. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing this article.
I’ve been entertained as well as educated by watching many Korean dramas on Viki. Thanks to the various editor notes in drama subtitles and comments from volunteer staff as well as viewers, I’ve become challenged to learn more about Korean and Asian cultures. I’m so grateful to the community of volunteers for their dedication and patience in the service they provide here at Viki.
During the 12 years I’ve been a Viki user, I’ve met many wonderful people from the Viki community.
