[Viki Community Team] Important Update: “Team Discussion” Section Transitioning to Discourse

I still don’t see the TD here abd I can’t complain about it. The new one is …
On one finished channel, I could not even klick on continue discussion

As someone on the English team, I have to say this update is actually more of a hinderance. The entire point of the Team Discussions was its convenience being in the subtitling/segmenting editor. It was easy for segmenters (and in the past English subbers) to quickly notify others that they were working on a part.

And during the past two days, I think below are the biggest flaws and what could be changed to make it better.

  1. Make it so we can send messages. I honestly don’t see the point of adding it to the subtitle/segmenting editor if you can’t send messages from it. It really serves no purpose because most of the time the messages displayed are old and irrelevant to the current work the team is doing.

  2. Put the latest messages at the top. As mentioned above, having conversations from weeks even months ago at the top is not beneficial. I don’t care that the trailers have been QC’d and final edited when I’m already working on Episode 20. The previous Team Discussion allowed me to always be up to date on the latest QC’d episodes as well as if my TE teammates finished the episode before mine. It was a quick check since I typically have all tabs of each show I edit always on my browser. But now I usually have to open a whole other link and scroll to see the process since there are too many messages. In a standard 40 episode Chinese drama, that would mean an average of at least 280 comments with the segmenters, the chief segmenter, the TEs and the CE all commenting the bare minimum.

  3. Make conversations easier to follow. In the previous Team Discussions, it was easy to tell what exactly people were replying to. In Discussions, it shows information chronologically from when they were posted which means others posts can separate a conversation that is being had. And in the subtitle/segmenting editor, you can’t even follow the conversation since it only shows who they are replying to not what.

Honestly, these issues probably can’t be fixed on Viki’s side since it is through Discourse. However it would have been nice if Viki actually got suggestions and critiques from those who would be using it before implementing it.

Excellent points, and I share all of these same concerns.

Not to mention that for me, in Team Discussion for some of my projects, the most current posts are not even visible even if I scroll to the bottom. It just says such-and-such number of additional posts, but I have to click on the “continue discussion” to see them here in Discussions. I can’t even get them in the editor.

To make your work easier, you should save the link so that it automatically jumps to the last message. Copy the link to the new Team Discussion in the Team Notes and make sure that /999 is at the end of the link. This will automatically take you to the last message.

To make it easier to follow the conversation, you should now make sure that you include the part you are replying to as a quote in your message. This makes it easier to follow answers to questions or conversations in general.

Then it looks like this and everyone can see what you are replying to.

This is Viki’s solution to the problem that some people didn’t have access to the Team Discussion. So what’s the bigger problem? Not being able to read anything or having to adapt to the new version?
Surely the cookie problem should have been solved so that people could access the Team Discussion and we didn’t need this new Team Discussion, but maybe that wasn’t possible for some reason unknown to us.

I don’t think we will get the old Team Discussion back. We can only describe the things that we are experiencing with the new Team Discussion and hope that some things can be changed.

Maybe the hint with the /999 at the end of the link will help you to make your work a little easier.

I have created a guide for the new Team Discussion for my segmenters.

Perhaps this will also help some of you.

I would be happy if you could give me feedback on whether it contains everything you need to start working with the new Team Discussion or whether you think something should be added.

You are amazing! Thank you for this.

@vikicommunity Can you increase the time I can edit a comment. In the old Team Discussion I think it was 9 days. I don’t think that much is needed, but 1 day is not enough. I wrote this yesterday and can’t change it today. Only delete and rewrite.

@vikicommunity
Can the number of people who can be mentioned be increased?
If you want to thank your team at the end of the drama, 10 people is a bit low.

I want to be able to post freely and as many times in a row that is needed in TD. At the moment not being able is hindering my work.

There is currently no restriction on the number of consecutive posts. This has been changed. I have just made 7 posts in a row and there was no error message. Previously, no more than 3 were allowed.

So far, all the things I have noted here have actually been changed and adjusted.

I can also change comments that are older than 1 day. Currently it is possible for 3 days, my comment before that is 9 days old and it no longer works. So I don’t know whether it’s only three days or whether it would work for longer. I’ll keep an eye on it over the next few days to see when the pen to change it is gone.

I have to say that I am positively surprised at how quickly everything is implemented and changed. It would be even nicer if you could give us some feedback that you have changed this so that we don’t have to find out for ourselves.

You cant do 30… I have tried otherwise I wouldnt have posted about it. I don’t like complaining if I dont have a problem.

I have edited a post that was as old as four days from its date of posting. Perhaps they upped it to one week.
