[Viki Community Team] Important Update: “Team Discussion” Section Transitioning to Discourse

Hello Contributors,

We have an important update regarding the “Team Discussion” section in the subber tool. Starting August 5th, 2025 (PDT), Team Discussion will now live in our Viki Discussions Forum on Discourse.

Please note the “Team Discussion” section will be unavailable during the hours of 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM PDT on August 5, 2025. Please plan your work accordingly.

Why are we making this change?

We are committed to providing a usable experience for all our Contributors and have decided that moving to the Viki Discussions Forum on Discourse is the best solution for everyone.

What can I expect with this change?

  • You will still be able to view the Team Discussion thread directly within the subber tool (read-only).
  • To reply to a thread, just click on the “Continue Discussion” button to open the thread in the Viki Discussions forum.
  • If you already have a Viki Discussions account, there is no need to create a new account. You will automatically be connected to your existing Viki Discussions account when you click on the “Continue Discussion” button.

For Contributors who haven’t accessed the Viki Discussions Forum on Discourse before:

  • You will still be able to view all threads in the subber tool’s Team Discussion tab (read-only).
  • If you wish to reply to a thread, just click the “Continue Discussion” button and the thread will open in the Viki Discussions forum. You will be prompted to log in, but your new Viki Discussions account will automatically be associated with your existing Viki account — no extra sign-up will be required.

Thank you for being a part of the Viki Contributor community!

How does it work for those of us who can’t see the Team Discussions (EU)?

You can’t see it because the current TD is based on the Disqus platform, which will be replaced by the Discourse platform, the one this forum is based on. So the problem of not seeing the TD from Europe will be solved. Disqus and Discourse are two different platforms.

Ah! So basically the TD will become visible for us? That would be wonderful. Thank you Robert!

The change has been made, but I still have to use a VPN to access the TD. (EU)

Indeed, I still can’t see them (and I don’t use VPN).

Channel Managers (if they have access to TD in the editor) can send a direct link to the channel chat on Discussions, and this way the whole Team will be able to see it on Discussions as long as they have a Discussions account. Simply copy the conversation address/link from the browser and send it to the Team. This should work for now. The last digit/number in the link seems to be the number of a particular message (most recent one, probably), so removing it will open the conversation at the very top. Hopefully, it’ll work for everyone.

It’s still junk. All my active dramas, the “read-only” are still month’s behind, mostly in May, so… we’re still “blind” and have to open discussion only to have to scroll to the very bottom and weed out the BS to find what we need. This is not a fix, but a landscaping session. I’m spending way too much time looking for answers to questions that were asked and answering those who need those answers.

Seriously, if you have a Team Chat in the Viki Messenger, it is way more informative and quicker than this chaos.

I know most of my EU buds can’t see on the TD, but that little red notification bubble was my saving grace. Without it, I’m very sure that I’ll be slower to edit because I won’t know what dramas are ready for the FE. THIS SERIOUSLY BUGS THE BEJEEZUS OUT OF ME!

Simply set the post to Watching and you will receive an e-mail every time something is posted. That way you won’t miss anything and will be informed immediately

This should be fixed… I don’t want to write a fairy tale when I only have brief, factual information about my work. @vikicommunity

NO WAY! My phone will ping for every response on every team thread. When they were moving things over, my phone wouldn’t shut up, until I finally figured out how to turn it off. I had to mute every drama.

I don’t want to have to be dependent on my phone/email for Viki… I’m not being paid to volunteer on Viki, so my phone/email shouldn’t be reminding me every time to come back, being made into a work phone/email.

If they can mark the mail with a notifications bubble, they should be able to mark the Discussion with a notifications bubble for anything that I’m “tracking” on this forum.

This move is inefficient. We are having to make more moves to do simple things.

I can see the format like vikicommunity has pictured without VPN, but there are several different projects mentioned… it’s weird… also there is no reply except the continue discussion on top so if I want to reply to a specific person it’s likely not gonna work…

It already was like that on the old TD/Disqus. Probably a bug.

@vikicommunity
You solved the problem mentioned above with the brief, factual information about the work immediately.

Maybe you can do something here too. I would like to thank my team as usual and that is no longer possible.

This was something I was going to write about… It’s a problem not only as a CS but also as an admin in NSSA, today I had to post a student in a previous post… I’m the only one that assign that level so not being able to post or being told that I should wait for someone else to post before I post again isn’t possible.

The English editors must also be able to answer multiple times. What if, by chance, several people have questions that need to be answered?

Well, segmenters could update their post and include the next part in the first post. That would be clearer than writing a new comment for each part anyway.

You can now say that the like as a thank you has to be enough, but that would be a step backwards from before, when it was possible.

But answering questions or creating new comments must be possible at any time, no matter how many times I have to do it in a row. Otherwise it delays the work of the whole team.

I totally agree… Everyone has to be able to do what they need to do and not have to complictate things for themselfs…

I don’t think the new kind of Team Discussion is bad. Anyone who has previously done a lot here in Discussions will also get on well with this change.
Some adjustments are necessary, but they have been implemented quickly so far. I’m curious to see how quickly everyone will become familiar with it and see it as normal.

I had a segmenter today who posted something here for the first time and was immediately blocked. That shouldn’t happen either. The team is told to write in the new Team Discussion and are redirected there via a direct link from the old Team Discussion and if they then write, they are blocked.
