Watch Party Link issues - Resolved

I made this thread only to submit the Watch Party Link problem to Viki. Please do not comment unless you are Viki staff.

System SPECS:

Windows 10 Home, version 10.0.19043 Build 19043 x64 bit

Processor Intel(R) Core™ i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz, 2208 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)

32GB Ram

Chrome. Version 94.0.4606.81

This error occurs with EVERY show that has a Watch Party link; For example:
Jazzy-

I click the popcorn bucket name it and click Create Watch party:

I get the Congrats window:

No URL text link is visible. So I click the chain Link icon:

I get: “copied to clipboard”

The URL at the top of this window is: https://www.viki.com/user-party/JZaSfDmr

This is the actual URL of the Watch Party:
https://www.viki.com/user-party/JZaSfDmr

BOTH of the above Watch Party Links are redirected to the Viki Home page.

HOWEVER, when I post that SAME copied link on Discord:

Which uses the same URL - It brings me to the intended Watch Party.

Conclusion:
What this tells me is that Viki does not want us to make watch parties with people who are already on Viki’s site but wants us to advertise Viki Watch Parties on other platforms.

I found it - No way to close it as resolved.

How to find requests/complaints you made at the HC:

Got to the HC on the top right click on your ID

Click on My activities

Now you are on the page with all your requests and can do whatever you like.

Or if it was an open complaint, click on contributions and there are all the topics you opened at HC.

There you go.

Well in all these years here, you often need to find a solution that works for you until Viki manages to fix a bug or get a function back to what it was before.

Ah. I just commented on Vivi’s complaint because when she saw that she needed to supply specs she basically threw it at me in fright. :laughing:
I don’t have an option to resolve the topic. Vivi has to close it as resolved.

:laughing: Big dummy here. It didn’t even occur to me to use the hyper link icon. I SHOULD KNOW BETTER! What kind of tech geek am I anyway! Sheesh! I’ve been retired too long! :rofl::laughing::sunglasses:

I should quit watching kdramas :heartbeat: and get back to reading tech articles. :nerd_face:

Just leave it as it is, you will see if Viki will take on the challenge to change it back, or just say “Good that you found a solution”. LOL

hmmm. Ok, I’ve put on my geek hat to do some troubleshooting. Let’s test this.

The Straight Link to Yumi’s Cells brings up the show’s home page.

Using the hyperlink icon makes a blue link that takes you to the home page.

Ok. Now to test the Watch Party links:

I have the option to Click to copy the link to clipboard or to invite via facebook. Twitter, WhatsApp or Messenger. I select ‘Copy the link’ and paste that here.

That takes me to viki’s home page. So, I use the Hyperlink button to create:
chat2 and I get the blue link

That brings me to the Watch Party

Ok. So what have we learned with this experiment?

  • Posting a shows’ page link on the discussion board brings one to the shows’ page but posting a Watch Party link on the Discussion board only brings you to the Viki home page.

What could cause this discrepancy?

We’d need to look at the source code for this site to find out what piece of code they put into the HTML that redirects only the Watch party links to the home page.

Haha, you are the pro, I just always try to use it, so it works for me.
Wish I knew more, but sometimes codes are like math formulas, they appear blurred in front of my eyes the longer I look at them.

Well, I don’t want to spend all night looking for the specific reason especially since it has so many style sheets and classes to wade through. But it looks to me like they want us to advertise the watch parties on other sites. There is no other reason to make ONLY the watch party links go to the home page when posted on the Discussion board when any other Viki link goes directly to that link.

I am testing links so that one was probably pulled during the test. I am pulling them after posting results.

There is a recent problem with posting the direct watch party links on the discussion board. lutra’s solution to use the hyperlink does work for watch parties but we never had to use the hyperlink for any Viki site show links. AND we do not have to use the hyperlink to post any other Viki page on the discussion board. Only the Watch Party links require that now.

It’s really a moot point now that we have a workaround but it was very frustrating for us up til now to post watch party links.

Hey Guys! The Watch Party Link is having issues! If I post a link for you guys in discussions it is going to the home page! How do I report this??? To Viki???

Maybe you can “unlink” the link.

Just add a space after .com/ and viewers can remove it while copy pasting.
