Not counting me, I’m not in the running.
I literally love historical dramas. I’ve watched many, but probably no more than 15. This might seem weird, but I kinda feel like I love Korean historical dramas so much because I had a past life in Korea; whenever I see a hanbok, hanok, or anything related to Korean history, I feel as if I already know it. But yes, I really do love sageuks.
I believe we’ve spoken once or twice on the subject. :).
I’m not sure why the question, but yes, I do maintain a list of all Asian dramas I’ve seen, along with information about them, and I have seen a very long list of sageuk.
I suppose I might answer the question better if I knew what the aim was.
I mean, I wrote a note to the editors of Six about the bows… unfortunately this led to someone um…talking me into this volunteering thing and now I have a lot less time to WATCH these shows…so…
I might be better classed as a lover of history of the world in many ways… Sageuk is one pleasant way to enjoy this love of history. :).
I have watched exactly two modern Asian dramas.
And I would love us to get JDJ or JYS…or the Book of Corrections. :). If you work on Jumong, I will find time to help somehow.
GeNie of the Lamp who finally got a chance to watch Rebel…

Between this and Chinese historical dramas, I don’t know where I’d find the time to watch them all haha.
Of those that you haven’t seen yet, I’d highly recommend these:
Hwang Jin Yi
Queen In Hyun’s Man
Yi San
Jumong
The Emperor of the Sea
The Princess’ Man
Damo
Hur Jun
Painter of the Wind
Tamra, the Island
Some of these are old so I don’t know if you can find them.
Yes, I wanted to watch f.e. Queen In Hyun’s man (want to watch it after Empress Ki) for a while now and Hwang Jin Yi (restricted on Viki ). I’m sure some of them are available on the Viki. These rest I’d have to find somewhere…
Thanks for your suggestions
Here are my suggestions:
- Jumong.
- Warrior Baek Dong Soo. You’re watching Empress Ki - you’ll see your Emperor here. This drama has the best FIRST EP EVER.
- Yi San. You’ve seen Dong Yi, Yi San goes with it.
- Painter of the Wind. This one…is short but SO good.
- Queen Insoo - you’ve seen Six Flying Dragons…this is a sort of sequel about Sejo. (IF you can find it though, see SEJONG THE GREAT aka Daewang Sejong first. it goes right in there AND Tree with Deep Roots - Sejong is an awesome story. Jeong Youngsil also is part of this.
- After Warrior Baek Dong Soo - See JACKPOT. You’ll also recognize your young CP from Moon Embracing the Sun.
- Su Baek Hyang, the King’s Daughter. This one…get past the weird opening in ep 1 and watch it. You will find STUNNING performances and it’s really great. Wish we had it here, seriously.
- Want your heart to be broken in your chest…the Book of Corrections will do that. It is a necessary and incredible drama.
- Queen Inhyun’s Man…a lighter work…but it’s very fun and I find I watch it again at times. Hardly serious. Short.
- You’ve seen Six Flying Dragons…The Throne, with Yoo Ah In is a must-see. It also goes with YI SAN and Dong Yi.
- Jeong Do Jeon. You see more of the Six Flying Dragons story and it’s an interesting perspective.
- Rebel - the thief has a weird name BUT it’s a good sequel in some ways to Queen Insoo. You understand what happened IF you watch Insoo first.
- Kingdom of the Wind is good too. So many good dramas.
OKAY now for an odd suggestion BUT…consider that it’s technically about a 900 yo warrior…
If you have not seen GOBLIN, THIS IS A MUST.
Ones to forget:
the Merchant. This is a complete train wreck.
the Great Merchant - yeah I couldn’t get into this.
Jung Yi, Goddess of Fire. I…admit to being horribly bored.
Emperor of the Sea…oh my god, I quit there, despite the talent in it, the writing is so…deadly…boring.
I did watch Jang Ok Jung, but have to say…I think she kinda was truly evil and this makes her a saint
I was much less a fan of Great King’s Dream…takes the force from Great Queen Seon Deuk for one thing. And…I preferred the more brutal Gye Baek sigh.
So many great dramas. I would like to “WHEN I HAVE TIME”…put together a timeline with the CHINESE historical dramas, side by side.
And I still hope (against hope mostly) we’ll get the great Japanese stories here too. I got seriously hooked on SANADA MARU for one.
So many more stories we should have, could have, would love to have.
You know I’d help work on them, sigh.
Please enjoy,
Dueling Qianlong Crunchy Qing Donuts
Thanks for your detailed list! I’ll try to follow it.
Haha of course I’ve seen Goblin… it was one of the few dramas I watched as the episodes got uploaded weekly.
Now… just don’t have time haha. When I work on the Chinese dramas (I keep missing the upload time now… oops) I sorta watch the parts I work with and decide if I put it on my list or not (I still haven’t seen Nirvana in Fire…yes, I know.)
Actually I’m watching Flower in Prison at the moment, then Empress Ki and then I’ll watch Warrior Baek Dong Soo and the rest of your list.
Haha you do so much already!
Xie Xie
Dude. I am impressed. I thought I could compete but you make me look like a noob!
Do you maybe know where I can find Empress Ki to watch?
There is a legal site that has it, I have sent you the one I am aware of.
So, I’ve just finished Warrior Baek Dong Soo (I enjoyed that one the charisma between the older actors is on point). Also watched Flower in Prinson, Empress Ki and Queen In Hyun’s man, and watching Haechi as I’m working on the episodes. I watch the sageuks between other dramas now.
And I’ve now found Great King Sejong to watch. But holy-moly! 86 episodes? WOW!
When will I finish? XD (The longest drama I watched till now was 76 episodes)
Sejong is really good. You’ll find it seems shorter.
the same two older actors from Warrior Baek Dong Soo are in Jackpot - along with good younger actors.
WBDS has the best first episode ever, right?
If you watch Jang Yeongsil - you’ll see the same Sejong also by the way. Some of these actors get a name playing a king very well and so they keep playing him.
Haechi was excellent.
Please have fun
GeNie
Thanks
And yes, the first episode was great (I’m still haunted by that boiling-the-baby scene though…)
Yes, I know what you mean
Sky Lord is ranked in my top 3 villains. Along with Lady Mishil and El Temur.
I love lady Mishil! Definitely in my top villains, as well al El Temur. The sky lord was evil, but he had this weird charisma about him, I guess just like lady Mishil. Haha I have to agree with your list. I feel like I’m leaving out someone… but I forgot who. I’ll remember later XD
You are totally right!
I’m halfway through and it’s wonderful. Too bad Viki doesn’t have this drama, it’s really great till now.
(I especially like that they show all the characters as multi-dimensional, every bad character has good qualities, every good character has bad qualities). OST is also great.
To see a reprise of your Kings - Jang Youngsil - there’s places to watch that around. Also has the STAR of JUMONG and his triplet children.
also it’s about a great man - sigh. A slave who definitely helped the Great Sejong.
So many great dramas…I could watch Sejong again.
