After seeing the drama Bad Guy I have to admit that I had not yet seen a drama of this caliber.
For one thing, editing was done superbly. As an example, repeating the same sequence of scenes, but with insertion of one extra scene leads the viewer to a completely new conclusion as to what is actually going on.
Then, the photography is different, often playing with focus and shadows. Not everything had to be perfect.
The storyline was tight, never boring, not one scene was superfluous.
Lastly, and Iām sure I donāt have to mention this to anybody who has already seen this drama, but there was so much life and humanity in the characters, so much pain and hope, all jumbled up into an emotional roller-coaster.
Now, my question is, what other extraordinary, unusual, unexpected dramas have you seen so far? Which drama has hit the goal, which one has it all?
Ok, first, I got a confession. Iāve a love-hate relationship with drama.
I mean, not the series=dramas. but the genreā¦those real sad as I-cry-m-eyes-out dramas. :ā(
Usually when I choose to read a book, watch a movie and so on. I want something out of the ordinary, no real-life-hardships. BUT, thereās the thing. I like all good āthingsā. Good books, good anime, good mangĆ”, good drama! Even if I hate the genre, if itās good. I get hooked.
Ok,so back to the theme. Maybe not the same kind but some of the dramas that are really āitā for meā¦and comes to mind now :
- 49ģ¼ aka 49 days (supernatural; sadasfu*k; still crying after 3 years; hate!hate it!)
- Nice Guy (dark, shady and misunderstood lead guy)
- Iljimae (Historical; messed-up-superhero)
- Stairway to Heaven (old, but unforgettable)
- Tree of Heaven (sad, sad, sadā¦was never the same again)
So, those r the ones I remember now. :ā) good luck and a lot of tissues for you!
I missed this one so Iāll check it out on your recommendation. I would add āBeyond the cloudsā, āBig Manā ā3 Daysā, as these also were well directed and the actors kept in character throughout. The one Iām LOVING NOW is āGLORIOUS DAYā.
Iād also recommend the Taiwanese version of Iljimae (Yi Zhi Mei). Itās slightly typical, but also quirky and cute in its own way.
A recent often undiscussed drama An Innocent Mistake (Taiwanese) is phenomenal. The male lead was originally a stage actor (not stereotyping that all of them necessarily have to be good) but just saying that he definitely shows his expertise!!! A drama not to be missed.
And if you havenāt seen the epic Jewel in the Palaceā¦
Bad Guy was awesome I agree!
I have to say Iām not a big fan of Nice Guy, it has its good and bad sides, it definitely dragged a lot towards the end
the most unique kdrama Iāve ever seen was White Christmas, honestly, Iāve never seen anything like it in dramaland, such a dark psychological thriller and it poses some really interesting and unsettling ethical and philosophical questions
other dramas that surprised me:
Heartless City (dark, sexy stuff)
Man from the Stars (not very out-of-the-box but because it didnāt have a single weak episode, the quality was good from start to finish)
Full House 2 (it was like opening a cheap plastic box and finding a diamond inside)
Secret Love Affair (it felt realistic but in a very heightened way, hyper real, something about the tone and the characters was just really different)
itās kind of sad that I canāt really think of any true out-of-the-box-dramas other than White Christmasā¦
For me from this point of view(good and unexpected storyline, startling characters and outstanding actors, music) the best dramas Iāve seen so far were:
49 days
Triangle
Stairway to heaven
Winter Sonata
East of eden
Doctor Stranger
Jumong
Rooftop Prince
I hear your voice
10.The moon that embraced the sun
Iām hooked with this drama too. I usually do not like drama with over 24 episode but Iām glad this one. Main pair is so cute and a story is so good. Very good family drama!
I wanted to let you know that I just saw White Christmas and I was astounded! It really is a superb extraordinary drama, one that stays with you long after itās done.
One of the reasons I love this discussion page is that Iāve gotten so many great suggestions on dramas I may have missed or overlooked. I love to read and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of some shows and how the cast and director deal with the storyline. Now I have one mentioned here āWhite Christmasā to watch, hope to let you know if I love it also.
I just wanted to draw your attention to a genius drama called Incomplete Life (Misaeng), which charmed me completely with its simplicity and heart. Lots and lots of heart, despite the fact that itās an office-based drama and contains little or no romance!
I Miss You just ripped my insides out, and left me tearless and sleep-deprived. Iāve never before wished a female character to be cloned super fast, so that she can be split between the two leading men.
