I really want to Subtitle from English to Danish!

Hi everyone! :blush:

I really want to become an English → Danish subtitle translator on Viki because I would love to help make dramas and movies accessible for Danish viewers.

I have applied to a few projects, but I was told that I don’t have enough experience. I completely understand that quality is important, but I wonder how new contributors are supposed to gain experience if they aren’t given the opportunity to subtitle.

I also heard that it can help to have a Channel Manager for your language. Is that true? If so, is there a Danish Channel Manager I could contact or anyone who could point me in the right direction?

I am very motivated, willing to learn, and I would really appreciate any advice or opportunity.

What you need is not a Danish Channel Manager but a Danish Moderator. This is the person who leads the Danish team for the shows where they are added. The Channel Manager is the overseeing leader of the entire team for a show (all languages + segmenting). The Channel Manager (CM) is not allowed to add a subtitler or editor for a language if that show doesn’t have a moderator (and if there is a moderator, the moderator is the one who adds the team for that language). However, Viki made it technically impossible for the CM to add someone as a moderator if they don’t have at least 3,000 subtitles on their name (on Viki) in the language of choice. So you need a moderator whose team you can join.

I think I understand your difficulties and how you feel. I come from an even smaller language group – Finnish - so I also had to wait quite a while before receiving a reply and being able to get started. I haven’t seen any Danish moderator yet, but I’ll keep you in mind and let you know right away if I find one. I suspect not all moderators read this notice board. And some active moderators are away for the summer or only visit here occasionally.
Have you tried creating a sample yet? It’s a good way to practice subtitling and get familiar with the tool.
