I want to subtitle, what is the new process to be accepted?

I used to subtitle a lot here a few years back but ended up leaving to due to work etc. I’ve come back now and the process to subtitle has changed so much. I can subtitle from Korean to English and vice versa but I prefer to mainly subtitle from Korean or English into Kurdish which is my mother tongue since there are many people able to help translating to English anyway. I don’t mind either to be honest, I used to really enjoy subtitling Running Man but I can’t even see how to apply to be on the team anymore even after watching the main two videos regarding Segmenting and Subbing.

Subtitlers and Seggers? Viki doesn’t need them anymore as dramas are translated by AI and doesn’t accept even editors and Chief Segmenters. Rare languages like Kurdish were precious ONCE, but not now. So sorry, our community is dying, that’s all.

Don’t lose your hope. I’m also subtitling a rare language, Finnish. I started only recently, but I have noticed that there are a lot of newer series that you can join. My guess is that Running Man is simply so old that the team has already vanished, but you should try some newer ones.
If I have understood correctly, there is no longer any need to translate into English or some other big languages, because AI does it. But after the English editors have done their work, a possibility opens up to translate the series into other, smaller languages.

The difference is that at least Finnish has some moderators out there and, as far as I know, Kurdish doesn’t (anymore). And that’s the problem: no subber can start working on Viki as long as there is no experienced moderator to guide them. The CM is not allowed to add them. Viki set that rule a few years ago. Until then, you could just join a show as “subber without moderator.”

It depends on your definition of “need.” :smirk: Nowadays, English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French have presubs by default and then there are 30 languages and counting that at least occasionally have presubs, including Finnish and Dutch. Until recently, segmenters and editors could still improve those segments and subtitles, but then Viki started to bring out more and more shows that segmenters and English editors were not allowed to work on. And for OL (other languages), subbing is getting rare and turns into editing… as long as Viki still allows it.
Then there is the problem that Viki keeps more and more shows indefinitely for themselves instead of pointing out a CM (which of course would still be one of the Chosen Few, but let’s not get into that) and as long as Viki is the CM, no team is added.
Respected CSs have started saying their goodbyes, famous CEs have nothing left to do, and more and more small languages get the shock of seeing presubs in their language.
If you ask me, Viki is just waiting for us to give up and leave on our own so that they don’t have to actively send us away. Then they can later just say, “Sadly, the volunteers lost interest so we had no choice but to switch to AI/paid subbers.”

You must ask CM’s drama, a REAL CM (not Vikisubteam) for old dramas; it’s impossible for new ones.
