Spring-a-thon 2024 Community Update!

Is there a reason why the badge design changed from the initial announcement? It was really cute back then and now they look all so similar.

That would be interesting. I have quite the opposite problem as most people. I have the feeling I did not make 500 contributions in that time frame :see_no_evil:

Hi @iashley - a personal counter would be amazing, if only we had one!

We did want to provide some way for the community to see how close you are to reaching each Level and know that this post isn’t perfect but please know that we had the right intentions. We appreciate all of the constructive feedback as it helps us learn and move forward. Hopefully we won’t get bogged down by it all too much and so we can still have some fun. We are hoping that the new 100 point badge (just for Spring-a-thon) will also allow those who haven’t been able to earn an event badge yet to earn their first one by the time Spring-a-thon ends. Thank you all. Happy Spring! :sun_behind_rain_cloud: :sunflower: :tulip: :blossom:

Well, imagine you were an active subber. Suddenly, projects started to slow down even to the point that you can’t almost have anything to translate because most of dramas are coming pre-subbed.
Then, a Spring-a-thon or other one comes. Wouldn’t you wish to have enough projects to work on and try very hard to gain the best badge you could? I believe you would.
So now tell me how would you feel if a Sub-a-thon (or whatever event) came and you simply couldn’t put your heart on it because you have almost nothing to translate?
It’s saddening enough for them to watch there is such an event but they are limited. It would be saddening enough for you to see it as well, if it were your community.

Now, imagine that, on top of a such an event happening, you see only the ones that could moderate and edit were the ones that earned more badges with more points because your hands were tied due pre-subs.

Wouldn’t you feel even worse? It’s like a party where you can just get to the door but not fully enter because you don’t have a proper ticket allowing you to enjoy it.

I hope this clarifies why I discorded about the idea of publishing a list with all of us and felt that it would hurt them even more. Why? They would feel even more excluded.

Put yourself in their shoes, most of us would feel like that. I think.

Hi @rrmski - please know it’s always ok to ask a question here! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
If you get to 10,000 individual contribution points at Level 2 and aren’t able to contribute anymore, you will still be awarded a 10,000 point badge at Level 3 and Level 4, if/when they are reached! Hope this helps!!:clap::clap:

This is great news indeed. I’m usually quite fast! Thank you! You’re awesome!

@brendas On the positive side, it’s nice that there’s an option to have a few badges, I think some contributors suggested this in the past, so thank you for that!

The other Subathon with write as many lines as you want at x days/within a week was more fun because even one line/day could users help to get the e.g. 5 days badge.

The Springathon would have been nice if it was possible to collect the lower badges in a row so it would look like planting a tree that grows.

Now it’s not possible anymore because Level 1 was reached too fast and then less badges with higher amount could be collected if someone waits on the 100 lines badge now until going to the 250/500 … Badges/levels

I’m personally liking very much this “lack of control” over which badge I would get (and when)! I find the element of surprise to be fun.

It would have been even more fun if we had no way of knowing how much contributions the community has and just get informed: “You’ve reached level 1 on March 23rd at XX AM UTC”.

That is NOT true! I reached the 102 way before you announced that Level 1 was reached.
I’m out. If this game is played in such an unfair way, I can use my time better.

That’s not how it works. Level 1 was reached way before they announced it. As they stated before, they said they would make their first update on the 25th, but the level was reached like on the 23rd. So I guess you didn’t reach the 100 contributions on that date, but actually after a while. But as they said, you’ll have your badge later, with all cumulative contribution points when the second level will be reached.

So we are all in this blindfolded? That, indeed, is not fair.

I mean, I guess we are. But they let us know beforehand about this, as I stated in my last reply. But as @bozoli said, I also find it more interesting the “”

I think the exact rules were not clear for many of us.

That same lack of control makes me think, “why bother?”

Unfortunately I didn’t know I had to participate like crazy at the beginning of the subathon to earn any level 1 badge because there is no chance to catch up once the group goal was reached. But it is good to know if I reach the 1000 contributions badge at X point, it’s good at all successive levels.

People are different. We have always had fixed contribution periods on seg/subathons for those who like to know in advance, plan and calculate. This time we have this format for the other group of people who don’t mind not knowing.

Since it’s impossible to please everyone simultaneously, I suppose the best is to just remember that this is only a game and not to take it too seriously

It would have been much better to get each badge, like a milestone, and not randomly. Having just some I feel like I’m missing others, like an incomplete collection. It was the same with any event getting the 10k and TOP100 ones. But now I will have the 1k badge, maybe the 5k one, and finally the 10k (also hopping for the TOP100). Also, the event started on Friday, still a working day for me so I contributed just a bit, but on the weekend I was on Viki for 24-27 hours subbing and editing. So counting only the first 2 days for Lvl. 1… Working so hard for an entire weekend and getting only the 1k one… It would have been more rewarding to also get the 100, 250, 500 ones. This is actually what some of us requested several times on the previous events. These badges have no currency value, they don’t cost anything so I think it would be more appreciative to the contributors to get all of them in a milestone system. We have many badge lovers and we look forward to any chance to obtain more. Viki should fructify this situation.

Still a “game” with unfair rules of which the results will be visible on our profiles forever.
And some of us already have roles that don’t give us many contributions in the first place. Now we’re supposed to adjust our schedules and be working on Viki literally 24/7 just in case?
Even regular subathons are bad for the natural workflow, with people being solely focused on quantity instead of just focusing on their actual tasks. This is only making things worse.
