I haven’t seen it a lot, but yeah, I absolutely hate it when it happens.
In the one I mentioned it happened to a character that you weren’t supposed to like, but she did not deserve what happened to her. And they also paired it with something else that was traumatizing
There are certain times that I think: hmmm they cast this actress because she cries well (in Kdramas as well, btw). They always make them cry as much as possible in dramas they star in
Whichever. Some people prefer having a mental list. Others have lists so long that they prefer to write it down with pen and paper or keep track in an app or on a website like MDL
F.e. I used to keep track mentally, but then I ended up watching a drama I watched before and I realized it after watching the first 3 episodes . So I switched to keeping track on MDL (I have yet to find all of the dramas I’ve ever watched though )
I started out keeping track in a spiral notebook until some wonderful person here (I don’t recall who, exactly) mentioned the existence of MDL, and I haven’t looked back since. I am just as grateful for MDL as I am for Asian dramas. LOL I feel like it was personally made for someone like me who loves to know all those meaningless but fun details about my drama habits.
Whoa! Really??? Thankfully, I haven’t seen one like that yet. I completely understand your frustration. Writers, give them a break! But yeah, I’ve noticed that sometimes they do go all out with that type of trauma. In “Unchained Love”, all the girls just went through stuff like that, especially with the palace eunuchs and then on top of that the FL got someone close to her supposedly killed in front of her and I was like… “Guys, really? Wasn’t it enough?” But then again, maybe partially I should have expected it, seeing as the FL was a tribute lady. But still, come on! At least they watered all that stuff down with a lot of comedic moments.
What my main complaint is, though… Sometimes the happy endings last literal seconds. Don’t get me wrong, I love that it’s a happy ending, but also, I wish we got to see more of it. Apparently in China the audience prefers “tragic hero” stories and sad endings, so I’m wondering if they’re trying to kind of please both sides. They’ll have it supposedly be tragic for the Chinese audience and then in the last seconds they’ll have a happy ending for the international audience, which can even potentially be edited and easily cut out if needed. I don’t know, but that’s been my suspicion ever since I first heard that statement and it kind of seems to fall into place with all these tragic events ramped up to the max happening to these poor C-Drama characters that they sometimes seemingly nonsensically have in some dramas.
Hahaha! This was said so well. But yes, I think you may be right. I always joke, “It’s not a K-Drama if no one cries.” I think we should have K-Drama bingo with all these typical K-Drama things. One of the items has to be an actress/actor that cries well.
I actually have a list as a Word document, meticulously labeled by country of origin, split into a “Watched” and “Unwatched” category, which is then categorized into “Movies” and “TV Shows”, which is then categorized into different types like “Modern”, “Historical”, “Fantasy”, (“Xianxia/Wuxia” for C-Drama) etc… I used to have a messy list on my notes app on my phone, but it eventually became this. Hahaha! Yeah, it was a feat and it took a while. I’m usually not this organized, but sometimes I get spurts. But I also keep track of them on MDL.
I’ll add my two polls here, because it won’t let me reply a third time in a row.
Your favorite actor plays a really well-written 2ML that gives you 2ML syndrome
Your favorite actor plays the ML, but he’s badly written
0voters
A well written 2ML that gives you 2ML sydrome
An annoying 2ML that constantly comes between the couple over and over again
I don’t know necessarily if they “prefer” it, but seeing how they’ve have many tragic things happen in (recent) history, it might be a way to cope with their way of life or identifying with the main character.
Western literature / plays / cinema also used to focus on tragedies and/or how to cope with tragic situations, but that slowly changed to the happy ending trope.
F.e. as a kid I read the original / Grimm’s versions of fairy tales and was surprised by how much Disney changed the endings / part of the stories to make a happy ending possible. Seeing that Chinese dramas are focussing on happy endings a lot too, they might be going through the same change . Just my observation .
I don’t mind a tragic end, as long as I’m not watching too many in a row .
Hi, i’m not sure about what type of genre you prefer but i want to help so i can suggest “Krrish series” , it’s a series of 3 movies about aliens, heroes and villains.
there is also “Dhoom” series, “Tiger” series, i love bollywood as well if you couldn’t tell lol
oh, and also “Dabangg” series, all of these are actions with a little but nice romance but if you prefer a diff genre i can also suggest some.
I just want to clarify , between arches are the names of the actors / ML of the movies then after that the titles of their works, just for new viewers.
Hmmm, you might have a point. Literature and cinema is definitely shaped a lot by real experiences, even if the stories themselves are fictional. I do hope they’re going through the change too, because with this theory, happy endings would mean happier circumstances. I find that western stories also seems to be going through some changes again. I remember there was a lot of that “edgy” and “dark” stuff in the past 10ish or so years, but it seems to circling back to sitcoms and happy little romcoms. Maybe in addition to all we said, happy endings are getting more and more popular as a trend as well. Whatever it is, I am all for it. I like seeing people happy. Hahaha!
Also, yes, I was shocked to find out the original versions of the Disney stories too! Especially “The Little Mermaid”. I found that out very young and it was so sad. I still remember reading “She turned into seafoam”. I think I just blocked it out and decided that Disney’s ending was THE ending, because I just didn’t like that ending at all!
If you haven’t seen “Wedding Season”, I highly recommend it! It was adorable! Especially if you like romcoms, you’ll love it!
By the way, this reply goes out to both you and @mary19c11. Just so you know, I’ll be screenshotting your two replies to keep your lists because I’ve been curious to see more of Bollywood as well. Hahaha! I’ve seen a couple of movies and TV shows, but not too many. I am so looking forward to the new Archies remake. I loved that comic as a kid and I am really curious what Bollywood does with it, especially since “Riverdale” was a mess. I think this will be a much better adaptation. Any of the ones you guys mentioned romcoms or comedies? Those are my favorite genres. Hahaha! Also, have you guys seen “Mismatched”? I personally loved that one and there’s a third season coming out soon. Although, even though I really enjoyed it, for my next Bollywood watch, I was kind of hoping for something a bit more genuine, in more of that Bollywood style that’s so beloved with the musical element.
Rom-com is defenetly my favorite, but not all of my list is from it. See the trailer before watching most of them is soul touching, true stories or base on social issues! That really made an impact on me to not forget them! And I’m telling you even if they somehow sad they are worth it!
As i mentioned, the ones i recommended above were mostly action but they have a little bit of everything, romance, comedy, dances , you know.
if you want comedy, maybe:
3 Idiots, Dostana (2008), Heyy Babyy, Hera Pheri , Welcome (2007)
A person comes up to you and says that they heard that you like Asian dramas. They have no experience with them at all and are asking you for a recommendation and to show them a clip from that drama.
You can only show them: The worst Asian drama you’ve ever watched OR The most embarrassing scene in an Asian drama that you’ve watched
