We wanted to share some recent updates to our Contributor tools that pertain to subtitling and recruiting within a particular language. You can read the details below:
Language Selection
Subtitlers will now only be able to see and select their assigned language in the language drop down within the Subtitle Editor and Bulk Translation tools.
Similarly Language Moderators will only be able to see and select their assigned language in the language drop down in the Segment Timer.
Language Recruitment
Language Moderators will now only be able to recruit Subtitlers and Editors from their specific language. They will not be able to add Subtitlers and Editors from outside their language. For example, if you are a Spanish Moderator you will only be able to add Spanish Subtitlers and Spanish Editors to your team.
While these changes were made to help reduce inappropriate Contributor behavior, we will continue to need everyone’s help in reporting behavior that may be in violation of our Contributor Guidelines – behaviors such as subtitling abuse and role abuse. If you happen to witness something that warrants investigation, we encourage you to open a support ticket through our Contributor Help Center. A reminder that any Contributor who has been found guilty of violating our Guidelines will have their contribution points removed and will put themselves at risk for permanent suspension from Viki.
This is a good change, but now the Segmenters can no longer work properly with the presubs when combining or splitting segments.
To do that, we need access to the languages in which the presubs come in the Bulk Translator. @vikicommunity@brendas
I was just about to say that it makes it hard to back-up your subs in 1 language.
Previously, I would do this in the Bulk Translator by selection English and an empty language and then the target language and an empty language.
Instead of a backup of the subs, with each language separate, you now get EN + language together

@vikicommunity is it possible to leave 1 “empty language” that you can’t add anything to, but you can use to backup the subs?
Yes, it was noticed this morning at the BL Eccentric Romance. We then tested it and it doesn’t work as a segmenter.
The CS has access, the segmenters do not. We have to be added as All Language until this is resolved if the drama comes with presubs in multiple languages.
At the moment, all CSs must inform their CMs that all segmenters must be temporarily added as All Language. Otherwise we will not be able to work properly.
And that gives them all more power than they had before this change. Funny how Viki never thinks things through.
And if the CM doesn’t show up for a few days, you still get a delay.
It would be much more important that the CS can lock the segment timer when the QC is finished. The moderator or language editor can lock the editor when the subtitles are finished. However, the segments can still be changed. That simply makes no sense.
Wow, these changes are really awful to seggers, we can’t do a faster and proof error A&C w/o the access to the languages through the bulk, now we have to change again and again the language in the timer to every language we need to make the A&C, something we can finish in 20~30 minutes now takes more than an hour.
You will be temporarily added as All Language & Segmenter, otherwise you will not be able to work properly. When the drama is over or Viki has another solution, the segmenters will be removed as All Language again.
The CS will arrange this with the CMs accordingly.
We could also add all seggers as Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese subbers…
At least, it’s something the CS can do without waiting for the CM.
You have CRIPPLED the segmenters! We can NOT combine subtitles without this access! We do not WRITE subs. We fix badly formatted segments and paste the subs together!
You did not WANT non-moderator segmenters to have ALL LANGUAGES access. How in the world do you expect us to do our work!?!
I SUGGEST SEGMENTERS GO ON STRIKE UNTIL THIS IS RESOLVED PROPERLY!
Hi, everyone. We just wanted to quickly announce that what happened with the Bulk Translator was not expected as Segmenters were not supposed to be impacted by these updates. We have since rolled back the changes so Segmenters can continue operating as before while the team looks into what happened. We are very sorry for any disruption this may have caused today. We also greatly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we look into this matter!!
@brendas Nah, no need to apologize, Brenda. (Bev) BJW is my CS, she handled everything smoothly as always, and all seggers followed her lead. We figured you guys would fix it ASAP. Great job!
