Name Stylization Guidelines
It can be challenging to know the proper way to stylize a name when it’s in a language you’re not familiar with. To help make things clearer, we’ve written up a new Help Center article that addresses the correct formatting of names of actors & characters in Asian dramas. NSSA Graduates
Please congratulate the 2024 Fall quarter NSSA graduates!
In Sweden we are getting closer to “allahelgona” (all saints) a time where we think about family or friends that no longer are amongst us, it’s custom to go to graves and light a candle.
Congratulations to all of you that have graduated NSSA!
김수현 is Kim Soo Hyun, not Kim Soo-hyun or Soo-hyun Kim.
남궁민 is Namkoong Min, not Nam-koong Min or Nam Koong Min.
You first direct us to use Revised Romanization and then proceed to give examples with the wrong romanization. Please correct this.
It should be Kim Su Hyeon and Namgung Min.
However, you shouldn’t have used real-life people as examples, because usually, for real-life people like actors, politicians, singers etc., we honour their preferred romanization, so they are the exception.
Viki volunteers who use R.R. for all Korean character names and other terms make an exception for the following:
the very common surnames: Lee, Park, Kim, Kang, Choi,
one-vowel names (Ah, not A, Oh, not O) and
real-life celebrities who have chosen their own spelling.
And then you say:
In general, names in subtitles should appear exactly as they do in the synopsis so everything is kept consistent.
But in the synopsis is almost never in Revised Romanization.
Make up your mind!
The link we are told to follow also mentions the following:
"(4) Personal names are written by family name first, followed by a space and the given name. As a rule, syllables in given names are not seperated by hyphen, but it is admitted to use a hyphen between syllables. (Transcription in ( ) is permitted.)

민용하 Min Yongha (Min Yong-ha) 송나리 Song Nari (Song Na-ri)"
Three separate syllables for Korean names are not recommended here.
