I'm writing about the K- Drama fan community / I need your help

Hello, and thank you, for stopping by. I’m Frances Sacarello, and I’m a screenwriter from Puerto Rico. After four years of writing and devoting myself to keep learning the craft of screenwriting, I decided that it is time for me, to make my crossover and write in English. So now, I’m working on my new screenplay, and this one will be in English. The reason why I’m requesting your help, is because this story, it’s a romantic comedy, about a Korean drama lover. An extremely obsessed Korean drama lover, so obsessed, to the point of do whatever it takes, (even plastic surgery) to become herself the next Korean drama, lead actress. But, there is one little detail…she does not resemble a Korean…she’s an American.

Now, what I want from you is simple. In order to create amazing believable characters for this story, I have been researching the reasons why so many of us become very addicted to this type of dramas. And this is my questionnaire, for anyone who wants to help.

  1. How do you found about Korean drama?
  2. How many hours can you spend watching Korean drama a day? Your longest marathon/ how many hours?
  3. Why do you watch them? Why you like them so much?
  4. What is your favorite drama so far?
  5. Do you have a crush or platonic love with any actor/actress?

I will appreciate your help, you can answer all of them, or just the ones you want.
Again, thank you so much!
Frances

ROFLMFAO!!! Boy did you come to the right site than :stuck_out_tongue: @Niennavalar @Hesto @dramaaaaa @b2utybubbles add whoever else wouldn’t mind :stuck_out_tongue:

Question 1 I think you are asking how did you find out about Korean drama? I stumbled onto it by accident when I googled for Hana Yori Dango but didn’t type Anime and it brought up Meteor Garden I was o_O what’s this??? so technically it was TW dramas that lead me to the Japanese and than Korean dramas.
2. Honestly depends if I found a series I can’t stop watching I’ll watch all 24 eps with 0 or very little sleep.
3. I watch them because they create a World I can escape to and fall in love with the story the characters.
4. Gu Family Book had everything for me I laughed, I cried, I SCREAMED at the monitor I HATE you you EVIL man XDDDDD and there were several awwwwwwwww moments… the story was amazing, the cast was out of this World great and the special effect and filming were done really well.
5. LOL the group of us at the Pervert Club have a kidnapping list that is ever growing of men we must bring home with us when we go to Korea…I think EVERY drama we watch we crush on the male lead or the 2nd lead I don’t think there has been a drama to date where there isn’t someone we are going crazy over.
Now having answered the questions and being a drama watcher for over a decade I can honestly say that personally I would never be that crazy to get plastic surgery to be Korean…coughs stalking maybe if I wasn’t happily married J/King…this is just a hobby I enjoy since I find American tv to violent and just doesn’t have the same appeal…now though if you are talking about Fangirls and the K-Pop scene and their bias that do acting I could totally see that ROFLMFAO. Hope that helps

WHAT A GREAT TOPIC! omg ive been always wanting a movie/drama like that. lolol i really think your story is gonna come out fantastic, and ive been waiting to read or see a story like that. hope to watch your story one day!! omg thats really a great plot lol

plus, wow yay puerto rico! im puerto rican hahaha xP i always wanted to go over there. hopefully someday.

@melliebean_2 LOLOLOL omg thanks for thinking of us! we tottally can answer these questions. i think we’re the best for this job hahaha.

for lunasoleil :

1- i found out about korean dramas when i had this channel that had allot of chinese stuff on it.(ive always loved asian stuff, mangas and animes.) they started to give chinese movies, occasional chinese dramas, japanese as well as korean, (but i didnt know it was korean, didnt even know what that was lol). one day a friend told me she watched these asian dramas that are korean, and showed me Dream high episode 1, (my very first drama).she also told me there was a show called “playful kiss” and i watched that 1 soon after.it was a heavy addiction after that that will never ever stop.

2-how many hours can i watch them a day? before i can watch episode after episode until my eyes hurt and i didnt want to take any bathroom or snack breaks LOL but now i value my time and will watch 1/2 episodes every other day sadly. longest time has probably been only 5 episodes in a day.

3- i love the interaction between the characters, the drama, especially the romance. i love the whole hopless-romantic kind of stuff, and i also loved that i have never seen (here in america or even in spanish shows) actors give such emotion and passion in their acting all the while staying decent and clean in morals (for most dramas). i too want to escape from the reality that messy-life is to watch a beautiful love story.

4-thats really hard. i will say heartstrings. i like the old stuff better.
5-I HAVE MANY. lolol many loves and marriages going on (in my head of course LOL). my biggest k-drama love (im not sure if my biases in kpop count since they act in dramas.so i will just pick an actor actor for the heck of it) is Gong yoo. acting is great and his smile and charm are perfect.

i hope i helped you xP btw, if when you write this screen write and finish it, please do share with us when you can! i would love to see your story all done and ready. x)

@Lunasoleil Great topic for a screenplay!! I would love to watch it when it’s done!!

Now let me answer your questions…

1) How do you found about Korean drama?

I found out about it by accident. I was watching a local tv and they were airing BOF arabic dubbed… so I watched it, than marathoned through all the episodes in like less than 48 hours after finding it on the internet (Viki)… (I actually wrote an essay about this let me know if you would like to read it)

2) How many hours can you spend watching Korean drama a day? Your longest marathon/ how many hours?

I can watch from 3 hours (never less :stuck_out_tongue: ) to 12 hours of drama a day sometimes even more like 3 to 12 episodes? xD I’m not sure what was my most number of hours/episodes though…
3) Why do you watch them? Why you like them so much?

Mostly as a way of escaping reality… I live in a country where going out is not safe so dramas are what helps me escape depression sometimes…
But if you ask “why korean dramas” not others like turkish or american. it’s because i LOVE the korean culture and admire it. I like Asians. Since i was little, I found them really cute. I always told my parents I want asian eyes since i was really young (i fit ur character perfectly :p). Korean people are beautiful, they top all other asian nationalities in beauty for me. The dramas in korea have the type of cheesiness and cute romance that is really different from where i live. Also the saeguks are amazing! Very diffrent from my culture, but really fascinating.

4) What is your favorite drama so far?

That’s a hard question! I can give u a list not really just one :stuck_out_tongue:
My love from the star.
Gu family book.
49 days.
Lie to me

Okay i will stick to these 4 but there are many many more!!

5) Do you have a crush or platonic love with any actor/actress?

I would say I agree with the answer of @melliebean_2 though i should check that topic :stuck_out_tongue: I didn’t read it yet…
But well we all have a crush on at least one actor from every drama we watch!!
Currently I’m in love with kang ji hwan.
I also like: lee min ho, kim soo hyun, lee seung gi, park yoo chun, just to name a few, there are many many more…

If you need extra info I would love to help!

Thank you so much for replying to my post, and yes, your are absolutely right, I’m in the right place…uhm, I think that I’m also going to join that Pervert Club, lol I have some in mind that I would love to kidnap…hehe. Like you, I accidentally found Kdrama through an anime series. I used to watch anime when i was half my age, (now I’m 34) and like about three months ago after taking a break of writing and experience a time of not really knowing where to go or do next, i start just watching a lot of different things, I was in a kind of exploring and receptive mood. So, I felt like watching anime again, and i founded this serie Itazura na Kiss. And then, I discovered Playful Kiss and then Boys Over Flowers and then Ooooh! they lost me! LOL. Then Yay! Muse and inspiration are back, (first thoughts were, Oh i should write Kdramas, but then reality hit me hard) and when exploring and getting more into the dramas I came up with this idea of writing a comedy from the perspective of a kdrama addict (a very crazy one)…Again, thank you very much for the drama suggestions i will check them out, and thank you for answering my questions… fighting!

I’m glad that you liked the idea of this movie, and thank you very much for answering my questions. Wow i totally can relate, when I started watching these dramas I also watched marathons, just to finish each drama in two days if possible. Now I’m monitoring myself to make sure that I’m also productive and meaningful in my real life. Again, thank you for taking your time and answer this questions I truly appreciated. From my part I will put all my heart to write a good story, and i will do my best to have an awesome time while doing it.

Thank you so much for answering my questions. I will do my best to write a good story and after that, yes definitively I will take the next steps and find the ways to make it into a movie…but for now, i want to enjoy the writing. Like you, i think that the Korean people it’s beautiful, they resemble anime characters so much (They’re so cute!) and I love their sense of fashion. And yes the dramas are cheesy and cute but maybe that is one of the reasons we can’t stop watching them. (I watch them alone, just to keep the tough image in front of my hubby LOL)… Again thank you for offering you help, I will have you in mind. Thanks for your drama suggestions…fighting!

Okay here are my responses to the questions you ask,

  1. How do you found about Korean drama?
Well if anyone was to know about me is that one thing I was depressed for a very very long time. Sometimes It comes and goes but I don’t mind. I had to find something that would kick it to the curb and allow me to find peace again and that was it. Kdramas. I started off japanese but I wasn’t fond of the humor found in it.

  2. How many hours can you spend watching Korean drama a day? Your longest marathon/ how many hours?

I can spend many hours even a week sometimes. But now that I have 2 kids I usually will be in here in viki mainly at night. The longest I did a week long marathon.

  1. Why do you watch them? Why you like them so much?
I watch them because kdramas sometimes allowed me to cry when I was really closed off from crying, laugh when I really needed a laugh, and sleep when I got bored.

  2. What is your favorite drama so far?
I don’t have favorites but here are the ones I come to like:
    Tree with deep roots
    Painter of the wind
    Shining Inheritance
    Innocent Man
    Smile, You
    Secret
    Rooftop Prince
    Sungkyunkwan Scandal
    Will it snow in christmas

  3. Do you have a crush or platonic love with any actor/actress?
My Oh My loves, I guess 90% of the kmen (popMen)
    now kgirls…no… sorry

Thank you for your responses, and It’s good to hear that Kdramas help you cope in a good way with emotions. I think that besides the fact that the actors are so hot, the number one reason that most of us are getting so attached to the kdramas is because we can connect emotionally with them and yes it take us to an alter reality where crying is okay and there is always ( well for the dramas I have watched so far) a happy ending. For me, my favorite ones are the romantic comedies. Again thank you for your answers and drama suggestions.

I won’t survive on 1 episode a WEEK ROFLMFAO I HAVE to watch at least 1 a day!!!

I have to survive with Fall In Love WIth Me! Its only on sundays!

@Lunasoleil I think the best Genre is Romantic Comedy. Especially Kdrama’s ways of writing a script. I’m waiting for a drama to come about where the whole series come to end like it was all a dream. That’s what I have been waiting for. also I think it’s the old seguk dramas that have the funniest scenes. I just smile alot to those more because a little act of a joke can make you laugh and in your head your like omg that’s hilarious but can never do that in the real world.

Hello,
Cool idea and i thought about it as well. I read your preview in another post and i thought wow that’s my story . I will comment on the other post for idea and feedback let me answer your questions here.

  1. How do you found about Korean drama?
It was when i went to my little cousin house and they were so into drama in learning japanese and i decided to try one and it was Boy before flowers. I was thinking how could they watch the plot reading subtitles and now i am an addict .lol
  2. It depends , on my free days , i only switch from viki to dramafever depending on which site has what i want to watch. So i will say all day long. I did have a lot of marathon with boys before flowers.
  3. I watch them because they are enjoyable, fun and if somebody needs a little escape or bored i think that’s what i will recommend. I like them because i think the material is good, any age can watch those not too violent and clean . I am in a marathon of converting people to kdrama .Lol. I got my older sister to watch them but i have still yet to convince my litle sister.
4)My favorite so far is what happen in bali because it was dramatic . lol. , then come my prossecutor princess, king2hearts.
  4. There are so many good looking that’s it hard not to have a crush, i will say Jo insung, hyun bin,Seo Kang-Joon,yoo dojoon in let’s eat.
Ok Fighting c’est tout. I wish you can write a drama and viki avid fan all over the world can play their own version . it will be fun .

1) How do you found about Korean drama?
Hmm well my mom is Korean, so she’s been watching dramas on and off since the early 2000s. She recently got more into dramas when we moved to Korea in 2009, and I started watching with her. The first drama that I really got into and watched all the way through was Boys Over Flowers.

2) How many hours can you spend watching Korean drama a day? Your longest marathon/ how many hours?
On the average day I try to keep it down to one show (one hour) per day, but when I’m busy I may watch one episode every two or three days. My mom and I are catching up on Running Man right now so we’ve been marathoning hardcore. The most we’ve done is maybe 4 episodes in one day, so… 6 hours?

3) Why do you watch them? Why you like them so much?
Korean men are really attractive.

4) What is your favorite drama so far?
I really enjoyed dramas like Heirs and Coffee Prince but the drama that brought me the most stress/feels/excitement/pain/enjoyment was I Hear Your Voice. I have a soft spot for lawyer fiction.
I also really enjoyed Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I love traditional Korean things, especially the beautiful clothes. So of course I like historical dramas. ;]

5) Do you have a crush or platonic love with any actor/actress?
Yes! Lee Jong Suk. He was so high schooly and adorable and heartthrobby in I Hear Your Voice. (Sorry for making up words. OTL)

running man!! oh man i love them xD too funny

enough said.

LEE JONG SUK! oh man oh man, he is a lady killer indeed. i think we all have a soft spot for him. he is at the tip-top of my bias list for me with all my other faves.

i tottally agree with you i loved all 3. very very great dramas.

Hello , first of all , nice story ! It will be a hit !
Okay , so I found about dramas by mv’s , and it just hooked me at the very first start,
I can watch like 10 hours or more on the weekends .
The storyline is so creative , so fantastic , full of good writing , i never seen anything like that !
The actors and actress are quite beautiful , and are amazing at acting . The fashion , i mean a lot of dramas have characters who are like gods , more…the longs stares , the comedy , there’s also the rich world … So many reasons !
I don’t have a favorite , but i really enjoyed Nice Guy, Bridal Mask ,You who came from another Star, the heirs , You’re Beautiful… I dindn’t see much yet , but they are ones that i really went crazy about …
A crush ?Of corse i do, everyone does ,right ? Yoo Seung Hoo is such an underrated actor , Kim So Hyunn , i freakin’ love him … There are a lot of actors and actress that i love , but for me , the acting has to be preety dam good for me to have a crush on that actor/actress,

Hope it helped , and wish you good luck !

hey! thanks for your response, and I’m glad that you like the idea and that you can relate to it. I will definitively look forward your feedback, I’m always open to ideas, and constructive criticisms. So please do! And yes, i think that your idea, of a drama in where all the fans can play their own, would be awesome…I was having in mind a spin -off webseries. Some funny sketches of the kdrama club members…well thanks again!

hello, and thank you! I would make my best to make this story a hit. Like you, I think that is that combination of many good things that make the kdramas so addictive. For me, I can compared kdrama with a mix of soap opera and a TV series. The cinematography is good the acting is amazing, and one curious thing about them is that they can repeat the patterns and cliches in a way that for some reason you don’t get tired of it or bothered( in my own opinion of course) I also like the fact that the female lead is always or most of the time a regular girl next door. Of course a cute one, but one you can relate. At this time, like you, I don’t have a favorite one, but a bunch a faves. Again, thank you for your responses.
