K channels not requiring any pass to subtitle

This post is for subbers in “less common languages” (that is, other than English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Romanian, Italian.)
There are people who may be new to viki and would like to contribute by subtitling. However, if you don’t pay for a pass, you may have difficulty finding a project which doesn’t require a pass to access the videos.
I have gone through the more than 300 dramas for which I have been either channel manager or chief editor (All Languages Moderator) and made a list of the channels which have no pass requirement.
If you are fluent in one of the subbed languages and a “less common language” there probably is a channel for which you could contribute subtitles in your language.
Test your fluency in English to see if you can follow these instructions.

  1. Choose a channel from the list below and find a few channels which you think you could continue to work on until you have done 3000 subs and become a Qualified Contributor
  2. Check the available languages on the LAST episode of a channel you would like to work on.
    The channel cover page lists some of the languages available but I have found that some subbers in some languages never complete the entire series so check the last episode. Many languages only have the first several episodes subbed completely.
    If the language you want so sub in is less than 80% for the last episode, it is a good hunch that the channel could use your help.
  3. If there is a moderator listed for your language, then write to the moderator and the channel manager. If there is no moderator, or no one replies after 48 hours, write to the channel manager.
  4. If step 3 results in no replies, write to me in the viki pm function, and explain your fluency in one of the languages for which there is complete subtitles and the incomplete language you want to subtitle in. You need to be fluent in two languages in order to subtitle.
  5. Write to me ONLY about one channel. I will not add you simultaneously to more than one channel.
  6. Don’t ask me to find a channel which lacks your language – that’s your assignment!
    (Expect me to scold you severely if I find you wrote to me about a channel which is completely subbed in your language. )

As far as I know, the CM is responsible for choosing the team. You are not allowed to add subbers of other languages as a CE except maybe English subbers if you consider the role of the CE as an English moderator.
If the CM is not active, then Viki must be involved and not any member of the English team or any other language.

Dear Connie,
would you please exclude “Rich Man, Poor Woman” from your list? I’m the CM and still alive and active on Viki and I’m responsible for all other languages besides from English. Thanks! :grinning:

Hugs back at you, damiechan! I know you, Astrid (with an emoticon!), and deval-chloe understood my GOOD intention! Of course I will remove your channels. Many of the channels are 14 years old or older so the CM is no longer active – so I included everything and I was going through over 300 channels when I made the list so I didn’t check for the activity level of the managers.
When I receive an application to subtitle in a language other than English, I look up the name of the moderator and forward to the appropriate moderator, unless I know that the language is complete (and I so inform the applicant). If it is an “active” channel, I forward to the CM if there is no mod for the language. But I didn’t want to task a newbie with determining who is “active” and who is not. I thought that knowing that there are over 100 K channels which don’t require any pass at all and that there is at least one moderator still active at viki (me!) can help.
I often learn a channel manager is no longer active, or a specific language moderator is inactive because I get a message out of the blue from a frustrated newcomer who wrote to a specific language moderator and/or channel manager and never got any reply from both. Also, on some channels the cover page does not have the URL for the CM’s mail or each of the language mods but mine was available as chief editor – that’s why I received the “other language” requests which I have forwarded over the years to the appropriate language moderator or channel manager if they were still active.
Years ago I actually won a VISA gift card from viki for enabling the most people to get a QC and at least once a week I launch at least one person toward that goal. Subbing is fun and does reduce the language barrier from entertainment.

This list is super-useful. Not only for newbies but also for oldies who, for some reason, have been inactive and need a few hundred subs to renew their pass. Thank you for taking the time (and I know how many hours this must have cost!) to compile it. Surely the viewers will be happy as well if some languages which were half-done or almost done can be completed.
