Let's talk about indian tv shows/movies

Oops, thank you!

I consider and you consider it a different industry. I’m just saying people from other countries might not get the difference

I do, but not much. I like the Tamil/Malayalam industry better… usually more high quality :grimacing: But I watch almost every serial available when I go to my grandmother’s house :joy:

More than that, I like that the Malayalam films are more realistic, they tend to show real people with real-life day-to-day problems in real homes, not everybody lives in a fairy-tale mansion, and the men are not all handsome, sometimes they are quite fat too.
Problems like alcoholism (that film with Mohan Lal, although preechy), the one called “money”, the other one about how schoolgirls are lured by sweet-talking guys and then sold, the other one about getting into debt… Sometimes they are not that polished, their storylines sag or there’s not a satisfactory ending. But they feel true, which is refreshing, after all the glossy Bollywood productions, which nowadays are all about filming part of the story abroad, speaking English and dressing in European clothes - so much so that you don’t feel you’re watching an Indian film anymore.

(What was not realistic was that Mohan Lal still played the romantic hero in his advanced fifties, with very young and beautiful heroines who fell for him at first sight)

That’s exactly what I love about the Tamil/Malayalam Film industry! The production is beautiful and they remain true to our culture and tradition at the same time.

I haven’t ventured much into the Telegu ones so I can’t speak for that.

May be you didn’t noticed that it is a telugu film as most are dubbed into Hindi( the best ex - Baahubali) and some Telugu films are remaked into Hindi(ex - Munna Bhai mbbs )

The big question for me is: where does one look for “Other-wood” movies? I have seen a few Nepali movies that are up on YouTube.

We usually get all kinds of Indian movies on Amazon Prime(India). Other kinds… yeah, we resort to YouTube. But it’s not always subbed to English.
Usually the ones with high popularity or production/box office value end up on actual streaming services.

What do “Devanagari” folks think of BBC adaptations of novels about Inspector Ghote? When I came across them in the . . . 1990s? I was blown away.

Aside from the mystery novels of Ngaio Marsh, until then I had never read the novels of a popular modern British Author who did not keep tripping over . . . what did they always call it? “The White Man’s Burden.”

Even after the Sepoy Rebellion and The British Raj having a bright thought about Gurkhas and khukris on our side, eh what? . . .

Modern English-language (British English . . . Bringlish?) works of fiction with just regular citizens of any color in “The Raj” doing anything in a regular, boring, just doing what everyone does way . . .

I really did not see that coming out of the Home Counties, don’t you know, until that pukkah sahib Colonel Blimpy showed me that thingummy, you know, bunches of sheets of paper supposed to keep one literate, oh, blast, what is that thing??? Novel, is that it? No, no . . . begins with “b” . . . brook? Bach? Boot? . . .

(Actually, I found Inspector Ghote at my public library and got sucked right in . . .)
