Subtitle Status Question and Answer

Thank you so mutch

Where do you go to sub? I can speak Korean and English and I am learning simplified mandarin. I want to help others to view eng subs but I am new to viki and I don’t know where to go to sub it.

Short overview of what you are signing up for:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEu-narFnBg

There are different teams on viki who are hiring English subtitlers. For example, my channel Sister is Alive (https://www.viki.com/tv/35048c-sister-is-alive) is also hiring. Some teams require a short audition before starting.

Here are some community guidelines. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fe3dj5IWenyG6OHylvEEMCu2QwmQ5Rwiv_44NtaNcEQ/edit

Dear Minjoo,

First of all, welcome!
So let’s start from the basics.

Getting to know the subtitling community and the various roles
I suggest that you start by watching the videos about segmenting and subtitling, and read the various “roles” one can have in the viki community, here: https://www.viki.com/community

Captioning (transcribing)
If you want to start “softly” until you see how things work, you may start by captioning. There are lots of series which have hardsubs (“printed” on screen) and they need to be copied into the subtitle editor, so that other people can start translating them in other languages.

Segmenting
Segmenting is also fun. You have to be trained, though, you cannot just barge in and do it. If you want to, you can enroll for the (free) training here: http://nssacademy.weebly.com/about.html. They are wonderful people and teachers, very patient, and you will become proficient quickly if you put a little effort and thought into it. And you will be swamped with requests, as segmenters are not many, and they are very valuable.

Translating
If you think you are ready to subtitle, you have to find a project that interests you, and propose yourself to the English Moderator by personal message (under their profile avatar there is a little envelope which you can click) so that she can add you to the team. People who go into shows and translate without being a member of the team are called “abusers” and they can be scolded and, if they continue doing it, reported.

Where to find projects

  1. Just search for shows you like and which haven’t been translated yet.
  2. You can also write in the Team Discussion and say that you are available. Korean-English subtitlers are in great demand, so you will be immediately swamped with job offers.
    Here:
    https://discussions.viki.com/t/want-to-subtitle-let-people-know/33/1800
    BUT:
Since you don’t have viki pass and you are not a Qualified Contributor yet, you cannot work on new shows. They are all behind viki pass. Your best bet are older shows. If you can view it, then you can also work on it.
  3. Here is a list of all the dramas which need help in some way. Be sure to click on the links and make sure you can view them (that they are not behind viki pass) before offering to help.
    https://discussions.viki.com/t/the-following-channels-need-help-either-in-segmenting-and-subbing-or-only-in-subbing/13427

Read the subtitling guidelines
Before starting work, make sure to read the useful guidelines here, made by a long-time vikian Channel Manager, which are adopted by almost everybody here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fe3dj5IWenyG6OHylvEEMCu2QwmQ5Rwiv_44NtaNcEQ/edit

Becoming a QC
To be able to watch and work on almost every show here, you need to make 3000 segments or subtitles, to become Qualified Contributor. (This means approximately 3 hours of video, depending of course on how much dialogue it has). Then you automatically have Viki Pass and can even see many shows normally restricted in your geographical region.

I think that’s all for now.
If you need anything else, let us know!
Welcome again, and wishing you a pleasant stay here

I feel that starting from minjoorox_44’s question onwards, with our responses, the posts should be moved to the thread “You want to subtitle?” or even better a new one called “I am new here. Where do I start?
as they have nothing to do with the original thread topic.
What do you think?

I use eng subtitles but why does “He is Psychometric” have two subtitles at the same time and other is korea? kinda odd

@kamp_gumeson Look at your subtitle settings in the video. I bet you have “learn mode” activated not the English subtitles.

Here is an instance of a useful post that shouldn’t be buried.
Ajumma2 may be on hiatus right now, but her work will always be cherished and used with gratitude.

Hi irmar~
You are right that I’m not active anymore. But I get a notification when someone tags me or replies back to my post, so I came in to read your comment.
Hope you are doing well.

Hello
I wanted to ask if the German subtitles of Bel Ami will be completed.
These are the consequences where the German subtitles are not yet 100%.

Episode: 01 DE: 99%
Episode: 02 DE: 99%
Episode: 03 DE: 99%
Episode: 05 DE: 99%
Episode: 07 DE: 99%
Episode: 10 DE: 99%
Episode: 11 DE: 99%

Those episodes are considered more or less complete. If just one subtitle line is missing, the percentage of completion drops from 100% to 99%.

What could have happened is that the German subs were initially at 100% and then someone decided to add one segment for team credits in each episode. That would be enough to make the German subs appear incomplete, although the entire translation is fully complete.

will it ever be completed?

It is completed.

I watch the episode and see that there is always something missing in terms of text.

You can contact the moderator for German directly about this. If you go to the page of the series, click the Team tab, then click Moderators tab and you will find the German Moderator.

I did that a while ago, he doesn’t answer.
