I don’t think this really warrants a new topic, but it’s on my mind now, in a sort of bothering way.
When did people start using “Timing and subtitles” in team credits (instead of just subtitles)?
I would like to point out that subtitles are not simply translations, but also encompass things like timing and editing. And arguably any other quality check that goes into the final product, as well as the efforts of coordinating everyone.
I don’t know when did it start, but for me (and the channels I’m managing), I’m still using “Subtitles brought…”.
I have the same opinion as yours. Subtitles are produced by a team - from segmenters, subbers, editors to moderators.
It’s a team work. Thus, I’m still using “Subtitles…”.
I have no idea who started it anymore but I just copy paste what’s in the team notes and if it’s not there I just do “Subtitles…”.
I don’t mind which I have to use or is used as long as there is no “subtitles done by “username” @ viki.com” unless they truly did everything on their own which is almost never the case. I heard in some other languages that happens sometimes.
I think it also has to do with your point of view. One indeed sees it as a whole subtitling process including the editing, segging, subbing etc. Others only think of the subtitles as in the written words. Viki does that too as you can see here:
Not everyone on the volunteer team does write subtitles. Ever since I saw that I’m thinking of reporting it since it’s wrong.
Every once in a while I have to explain what segging is which is ok. But I also remember a very rude comment by someone who said that subbers should be getting more credit then seggers because everyone can seg and subbing takes skill. No idea why I even remember that rude comment.
All in all don’t let it bother you.
Let’s just put this out there:
There are no subtiltes without segmenters.
Period.
And this is coming from a pure subtitler.
These “new” credits are also disrespectful towards the already-mentioned editors, who are still omitted from the credits, and without whom tons and tons of subtitles of our favourite (and not so favourite) shows would not make any sense!
Credits should be unified, for all series/movies, for all languages. The only variable should be the team name. This should be demanded and regulated by Viki itself.

I get that, that people put different meanings to “subtitles.” Even as a site, we often use the term subtitler for translators.
I always felt that “subtitles” was a good all-encompassing term. But if we take it to only mean translations, by crediting “timing and subtitiles,” we’re leaving out various contributors like editors and moderators, etc. So unless we extend the credits to include all the roles involved, it seems wrong to make credits “timing and subtitles.” Which is why I still default to using “subtitles” only.
Of course, I guess the managers/team have the say in how they’d like to do credits. I have my own preferences as well. Though I do agree w/ @bozoli that it would be nice to have unified credits as well.

But the way I tend to want to do credits (and the way I do them on some fan channels I manage) is one line for “Subtitles by Team Name @Viki.com” followed by a line for seggers/timers, a line for translators. If I had any, I’d do a line for editors and maybe moderators per episode. And maybe a special thanks for the last episode, for like card designers and other channel helpers, etc.
I also only do credits once at the start and once at the end (on my channels) b/c I’ve always found the 5 or 6 credit lines a bit overkill per episode…
But to each their own; I try to comply to channel standards.
lot people might think that subtitlers are just the ones who made translations, but for me… Subtitlers are everyone who got involved in subtitle making. and every subtitlers (CM, Mod, Editor, Timer, Translator, Creative-team, so on) need some effort and hardwork to run their task. just like some said ‘it’s a team work’. otherwise, they might use “Translation by…” then “Timing by…” if they just work with one or two persons
