@kassidy2002, @loveurself_melanin,
Maybe you could join this conversation in French for @lolodu41_s_599, and @haccritics My reason is, like so many fans, we join, but come back later to discussions. Thanks!
I do hope other French fans will take care of your fellow French fans.
I speak English and Spanish, having been blessed in my formative years to learn both English and Spanish as una tejana original. After leaving Texas at age nine and being cut off from meaningful language development for years, I moved to Rochester, NY in the mid 1980s and met a large number of people from various parts of the Hispanic world. This very week I was able to contact a woman in my area who tutors in Spanish, and we are supposed to start working together by Zoom.
I found the video below yesterday, and it gives me hope that I can begin at long last to learn written Chinese. I have a good ear but have been overwhelmed for years at the prospect of recognizing and remembering thousands of characters with zero diacrirtical marks for pronunciation and no grammar that maps well onto “western” grammar.

I speak English. I took French in Jr & Sr High and college. I have been learning Mandarin Chinese for a couple of years. I love that I can get along without subtitles for many things and don’t realize when the subs are not completed yet.
If you want to learn Chinese for free from native mainland Chinese teachers, go to https://www.cherrytreelearning.org . There’s a grant that pays the teachers for the classes. They used to meet in person in California, USA prior to the pandemic. Now, they meet on Zoom and the students are from all over the world: Philippines, Finland, UAE, USA, and more. I’ve learned a lot from them, Duolingo, Drops, YouTube, watching dramas, podcasts, and more.
I also used to be an ESL teacher for Chinese speakers from all over East Asia. I also correct my associates’ and family members’ papers, resumes, and more. So, I’m looking forward to be a segger (passed the sandbox as of July 2022) and an editor with Viki.
See you around!
I’m from America I speak only English, I know a few words in Korean but I’m going to learn soon how to speak Korean cause South Korea is my favorite Country.
I recently started using Duolingo for Japanese, Spanish and French. Anyone else using the app?
I used to use the website, but it has changed a lot. On the free version, you now have to wait for a day or so to go on after making a certain amount of mistakes and the cookie settings nowadays take so long to load that they crash my computer. It’s too bad cause it used to be fun and it is actually the place where my interest in Korean began, which eventually led me to Viki.
Since I am enjoying the app so much, I was considering getting the paid version but I think I will continue with the free version. The way I see it, having a limited number of mistakes allowed actually makes me more careful and focused. The ads definitely are annoying but they also give me a chance to take a break away from staring at the phone screen for a prolonged time. My daughter’s boyfriend who is a Korean but is not fluent in Korean language has over 850 day streak on it. He and I have already done a Friend Quest together. I think it’s a nice way to encourage friends and family to learn a language.
