Annoying subtitles that bothers Me/Myself and I/ to see them here at this site

angelight313_941Regular

@vikiinformationassis

Not really I’m not, I’m just voicing my anger as to why certain groups in the Spanish teams do things that are not right since they recruited a person that hardly knows any Spanish, and this person although I have reported him or her for years now, nothing has been done to stop him/her from giving terrible quality subtitles; just like the abuser we had until recently that confessed he didn’t know most of the language he was subbing in, and just recently was finally removed from here after a long time of giving terrible subtitles in different language.

As a matter of fact, I never mentioned that @thaly1209 is the Spanish moderator of the show this person did work on, and she’s also the CM, and I believe Editor, too. I’m not saying she was the one who recruited him/her, but I don’t understand why there was any need to recruit this person who obviously doesn’t know how to write in Spanish. The Spanish teams have plenty of Spanish people that could have done better QUALITY subtitles. Why is it that this person keeps getting recruited in these Spanish teams when the EDITORS can see very clearly this person is incapable of working as a Spanish subtitler? When I go to the Spanish teams they say the team is full, but they have space for someone who has very little knowledge of the Spanish language. Does that makes sense?

Since I’m breaking the rules, then, why you are not doing your job, and find out why for more than 3 years now this person gets recruited as a Spanish subber? Do they recruit him/her so they can get contribution count as they edit the terrible subs plastered all over by this person? This person is more than qualify to do English editing or in any the other language he/she may know. By now, I’m guessing the Editors of the show fixed all that mess he/she wrote, but what makes no sense to me is that I’m always told the team is full, and I get turned down, but they always have space for someone who has no business making Spanish subtitles.

I have plenty of evidence of this person past work, too. This is the subtitles this person wrote only 4 months ago; although I file reports and gave evidence of the past badly done Spanish Subtitles (I’m talking about more than 3 years ago).

Mr./Mrs. CEO’s/ Investors; WHY are they doing this to each and everyone of you who invest your hard earned money for this site? They complain so much of the lack of respect on your part, when they have no respect whatsoever to the real Authority and Owners of this site. By this person giving bad Spanish Quality Subtitles is damaging the image of RakutenViki who has been known to give to viewers the best quality subtitles than any other site.
I have further evidence if needed but PLEASE>>>>

Get to the bottom of this, and investigate why this things are going on in here now more than ever. I’m not breaking any rules, I am defending my Language, and no one is doing a thing to stop this teams from doing things that lower the quality in the Spanish subtitles. @ I’m counting on you to do your job right this time and stop this from continuing to go on in here. Thank you very much for your attention.
image
DEAR CEO’s and investors: Hope your family and all of you are in good health.

I am pleading with you all to stop the actions certain Spanish teams are doing here at RakutenViki that can affect the integrity of this site. They flag post of mine and even edit my post to make it look like I am lying and they change the evidence I provided when they change the badly done Spanish subtitles done by a subber and changed them to ENGLISH. This is a form of bullying since they can attack me, but I can’t defend myself since is so many against me/ one. There are people that give me support but are not willing to make it public since they fear retaliation from these group of Spanish teams with no ethics or moral values because if they do they wouldn’t go this far. These are the same people that one day can betray RAKUTENVIKI since they have shown to go to extreme to cover their wrongdoing.
If they keep picking bad Spanish subber to accumulate contribution count they are denying paying subscribers to have their subtitles promptly because they have to do all this unnecessary Editing. These type of actions show their disloyalty towards their work as a faithful volunteer for Rviki Erasing evidence, denying charges given with evidence shows they are deceivers and can’t be trusted. PLEASE look into this situation, and look on how it can be resolve because volunteers that can give Quality in the subtitles are been denied to work as volunteers here at Rakutenviki for a very long time now.

This is what they did on this topic by a viki staff who has been here since NOVEMBER 7, 2013.

The VIA bot says I’m breaking rules and the VIA broke ALL the rules by changing what I wrote in the TOPIC without my approval or consent. This is the evidence how they change what I wrote to English although I was complaining about the Spanish subtitles. I have further evidence of how some of this Spanish teams hide their wrongdoings and I have evidence that the person in charge CM Moderator removed her project from her page, but not before i was able to save my evidence that she allows people that barely knows Spanish to work as Spanish subtitler degrading the quality of the Spanish subs here at viki.
I have plenty of evidence of this person past work, too. This is the subtitles this person wrote only 4 months ago; although I file reports and gave evidence of the past badly done Spanish Subtitles (I’m talking about for more than 3 years ago working as a spanish subber).
THEY CHANGED THE SUBTITLES TO ENGLISH BUT I HAVE THE ORIGINAL WRONGLY TRANSLATED TO SPANISH BY THE SUBBER. i WILL PROVIDE THE PERSON’S NAME IF NEEDED (THERE ARE SEVERAL WORKING AS SPANISH SUBBERS WHO REALLY DON’T KNOW SPANISH).

I’M guessing a real person and not VIA bot change my posting because VIA is here to help with our concerns not cover up for unethical Spanish teams. As you can see they forgot to erase SPANISH in the top. There is no perfect crime after all.

I hate to break it to you but if I am the CM of the show/movie, then I am not the Spanish moderator. You’re giving me all these roles without first double-checking. You’re barking at the wrong tree my dear.

I see you removed the show from your page but with that; you only prove to everyone how controlling this place and some teams can be. That’s called ‘‘abuse of power,’’ and I really hope the CEO’s/investors realize how dangerous that can be for them.
Please, DO respect me and stop referring to me as I’m a Dog barking up at your tree. That was so rude on your part.

Honey bun I cannot remove shows from my page. It doesn’t work like that. So technically speaking it doesn’t prove anything besides the point that you’re just making things up.

I think you don’t understand. I am not calling you a dog. It’s a saying.

Ma’am I do know the meaning of the saying. However, I think you’re the one who didn’t understand the fact that I was making fun of you. You’re saying that “el q se pica es pq ajo come”. I responded by saying that i do like eating garlic but I wasn’t itching because of a guilty mind. Funny how after your first accusation failed you’re diverting the topic by once again coming up with a random accusation. For your information, I was born and raised in Cuba. I came to the U.S when I was eight. I have always been fluent in Spanish since it is my maternal language. I don’t “allege” anything because I am a native Spanish speaker. You have a lot to say about “defending your language” and defending those who respect my language. Pero corazón, why would I defend someone who is doing more harm than good and that up until now has been spitting up lies.

Now, back to the initial topic, you accused me of being here since 2013, and I responded to your accusation. What do you have to say about that? Even better, before you claimed that “don’t believe me when I say that we have controlling groups here at RViki, and it’s from 2 females that have been here for ages… (not in the Spanish or Portuguese teams either) these individuals control those teams, too.” You claimed that they weren’t from the Spanish community, but how come you’re accusing me, someone from the Spanish community, of being here since 2013 and being part of said group?

What do you mean?

What got changed? Doesn’t it show, who edited the post?

How would that be possible? I don’t think people can do it

What is your record with reports? Mine child (report) will soon be 2 years old XD (still nothing done, I don’t even remember the details of that)

AS you can see my statement with the controlling group issue is true that some viki staff and some CM and Moderators, and even Chief Editors have a lot of control in here, and do things that are unethical (especially the Spanish teams for some weird reason).

LOOK how the [''VIA bot ] viki staff? changed the subtitles to English when I posted them in Spanish. (like the subber had posted them in the show). The only information of the changes done in my topic was; that it was done by someone that has been here since November 7, 2013.
That is why thaly says it wasn’t her bc she can’t, but someone did all this thing for her. I hope the CEO’s see the need to get to the bottom of this bc this may seem small to them but you never know how far this deceitful behavior can go. When it comes to this powerful company like Rakuten they need to watch their backs, and protect themselves bc is not something to take so lightly. I have seen links advertising companies and I bet they are not paying RAKUTEN company to have free advertising for their companies.

I am the moderator/CM in question. Removing a project from your profile is not possible, so I don’t know what this person is on about. In fact, they deleted their post from the other channel and brought the conversation here, which makes no sense.

Once again, you accused me of being here since 2013, after I defended myself, you changed your tune and said “you were only testing me to see if you could get more information”. Then you changed your tune again and accused me of having a bad subtitler in a show I am the moderator and CM of, but again, IF I AM THE CM OF A PROJECT, I WILL NOT TAKE THE SPANISH MODERATOR ROLE. I CANNOT REMOVE A SHOW FROM MY PROFILE EITHER.

Here is the list of shows I am CM of and their Spanish moderators:

Ghost Father: empty_space
Spiritwalker:pauher_02_298
Why you couldn’t get married: I took over this show, subs were done by the bot and new Spanish mod is azupeque
Showbiz Korea: Still looking for Spanish mod.
Where the truth lies:perilousal
Romance Doll: Yannapuma_99
Join us korea: empty_space
As you can see, those are the only projects that I am the CM of, and as you can see, I am not the Spanish moderator in any of them. So if you want to accuse someone, get the right information. I am done speaking of this matter.

This was not her first, second, nor third offense. In those incidents, the station she worked for said themselves that Ignorance was no excuse because 1. she has lived in the region all her life and 2. it is her job as a reporter to be sensitive to language and practices that can increase harm to her colleagues, coworkers, and viewers.

But in broadening the view of possible intentions, she still has no excuse for not understanding the coded language. She well within the age range of old Jim Crow laws and institutions and the New Jim Crow movement. Her past on-air egregious behaviour, she has already been educated on, she was already put on leave and counseled and issued an apology. She obviously didn’t learn her lesson. Given the current climate volatility, she is a liability for the viewership because she increases harm and racial trauma with her language usage and for the organization as a whole.

Understand that racism is an ongoing condition of our society, and not a one-time event. Not being able to see racism is unrelated to its reality or its consequences. Don’t position yourself as the judge of whether racism is real or whether it ‘occurred.’ Giving so-called ‘one-time offenders’ the benefit of the doubt only leaves BlPOC people vulnerable to ‘unaware’ racism. And I am not pulling this stuff out of the air.

Derald Wang Sue, a professor of Psychology and Education has been studying microaggressions and racism his entire career. He states ,The most detrimental forms of microaggressions are usually delivered by well-intentioned individuals who are unaware that they have engaged in harmful conduct toward a socially devalued group. These everyday occurrences may on the surface appear quite harmless, trivial, or be described as “small slights,” but research indicates they have a powerful impact upon the psychological well-being of marginalized groups and affect their standard of living by creating inequities in health care, education, and employment."

I would be happy to share my library of resources about this topic that may be helpful, since proximity to Blackness still leaves unanswered questions for those who cannot live the experiences. It can be a challenge to understand that while you are not seeing the harm, it is indeed significant to those that are vulnerable to it.

While I understand your irritation with some of the examples I would note that “extreme cursing” should be translated as is, if it is cursing or vulgar in the original language or you will fail to transmit the correct meaning, intention and ambience of the original. It would be incorrectly translated if you minced your words. In several korean dramas the cursing is colourful and strong. Much would be lost if we censored it unnecessarily.

The same goes for kicked the bucket. While we can discuss what expression would be most dialect neutral, if the original language is using a colloquial idiom or expression that points to “kicking the bucket” or “croaked” rather than formal expressions for “passing”, “dying”, etc then that should be respected in the translation to correctly communicate the class, type, style of the character that we are watching.

Often for example both in dubbing and subtitling from english to spanish outside viki I’ve seen american films from working class or criminal nhoods, where they are cursing their guts out, dubbed with expressions that are ridiculously mild in the context. It seriously detracts from the quality of the subtitle or dubbing, and is more distracting than a blunter and more honest translation.

Since you don’t mention the drama there is no way to check the context, but as I said sometimes cursing, and popular expressions are the best and most genuine translation for the original and the only restriction should be to try to find curses and expressions that are sufficiently broad in english to be understood by both american, asian, oceanian and european english speaker without feeling oddly regional.

As a lay person, I’d say to the translators, you’re job is two fold. First is to convey what is meant, and second, though no one on here seems to discuss this very much, is to express that as dialogue. Too often I’ll read a translation and wish the translator had spoken it out loud, just as an actor would. It’s the difference between the instruction manual you get for a new sewing machine and how your mother explain the appliance to you.

‘Isn’t the job tough enough, but now you want me to be a dramatist as well??!!’ Well, yes, but often, expressing something as naturally as dare is the easier path.

… and along comes the perfect example in a recent Japanese drama … “I’ve been at this job for over twenty years but I never experienced any of that. So, I was experiencing the excitement VICARIOUSLY through you”.

Whenever did anyone last use that term in a regular conversation? Probably never. It’s the stuff of posh journalism. Indeed, drop it, and the sentence still says what it needs to say without the need of any adverb, least of all such a bookish one.

The only ones I will be willing to discuss these issues any further, and show all the evidence I have; that…would be to the CEO’s of the RAKUTEN Company, that is, if they have any interest for that to be happening.

My only interest is for them to put a stop of what’s going on in here for a long time now when it comes to Spanish Subtitles in dramas/movies/shows etc; here at RViki site. ALL I want is for people to start respecting my native language, and don’t continue to disrespect my Spanish Language; like it has been done for way too long here at this site.

I am done discussing this matter any further with you.

The same goes for kicked the bucket.
Since you don’t mention the drama there is no way to check the context, but as I said sometimes cursing, and popular expressions are the best and most genuine translation for the original

The expression (subtitle) ‘‘Kicked the bucket’’ that I saw a long while ago was in a Asian drama, and it "supposedly’’ came from the mouth of an elderly Asian Lady that I highly doubt that phrase ‘‘really, really’’ came out of her ‘‘mouth.’’

My Korean understanding may not be perfect, but after so many years of watching Asian dramas, I can assure you that the elderly said something more towards; ‘‘So and so passed away (died) yesterday.’’ The person who did the translation decided to add ‘‘kicked the Bucket’’ for only WHO knows what reason.

When it comes to cursing I don’t doubt every race in the world does it, and I don’t EVER argue that it should not be added in the subtitles of course, if the actor/actress is actually saying it. My only issue when it comes to cursing in dramas comes from the fact that they are constantly using a curse against G-D, when I know Asian people don’t say that word at all. Some Asian actors say; Aish…, namjjog-ui gaejasig, and they always write now the curse against God as; G/D constantly. The Asian actor/actress are obviously not saying the G/D curse, but the subbers are continuously writing what is not coming from those actor/actress mouth. I think is very illegal and disrespectful to put words in the actor/actresses ‘‘mouth’’ that they (I highly doubt) would ever say in their lifetime, but these subbers now are being so rude, disrespectful and inconsiderate towards others/the viewers.

They don’t even have the decency now to add asterisks like they did in the past (to cover parts of the curse words), and they write the whole unpleasant word to see and have to read in a subtitle.

Now, I have nothing against cursing in Dubbing or Subtitles in dramas/movies/shows as long as I know the actor is saying what the script/writer demands he/she (actor/actress), says in their respective roles. I don’t know if you ever saw one of Samuel L. Jackson movie in which this man cursed so much in that movie, you hardly heard a decent sentence come out of his mouth, and I laughed so hard because his role was perfect for him, although the cursing was a bit too much, but the role he played it so well I didn’t mind all the cursing (since it’s just a role HE had to play, and cursing was 90% of the character role).

To me/myself and I, cursing here is not the issue, but adding stuff/words that are not spoken/said by the actors/actresses. To me, that is an issue since subbers are not there to add whatever they want to add as a subtitles since that’s a copyright infringement issue (which is considered a crime), and that’s something here at Rviki, and many other sites that lately they don’t put a stop to it, and allow some of these disrespectful subbers to work as they ‘‘please,’’ and not by the rules as they are mandated by guidelines, and of course by the common sense thing to do; Do their job right when adding subtitles in dramas. movies/shows, in any language, and in every part of the world. Don’t be adding stuff on their own; like they do so often now in dramas (which is killing the joy for some of us viewers) to watch and enjoy these subtitles translated from other original language, from dramas from all over the world. Let me add, I watch dramas from every part of the world for mainly two reasons, I enjoy seeing all these new countries through a film/drama; since I can’t afford the plane ticket, and also for the joy of knowing about other cultures from all around the world. I may be picky with some of the content/subtitles, but not the origin where is coming from because that’s what I like to do. Funny thing is, if I like a drama a whole lot, but I hate their subtitles, I close the captions and watch the drama without them.

I wish they would do that too. When I was a little girl my parents constantly travel from USA to our beautiful Island Puerto Rico, causing a struggle between keeping the English that we had barely learned, and re-learning the Spanish that we had forgotten. These struggle continued until we settled here in the US in my teens, but good thing that we had many years in my Island learning in Spanish was the only option we had (no English available back then, unless you went to a private/paying school). My biggest dread back then was to forget my beautiful Spanish language, but heaven helped us, and they had created here in USA the Bilingual Education program where our teachers would only speak to us in SPANISH, and the testing were done in Spanish until we could learn the English Language. As we started learning the English language, we could start getting the testing done in English too; until one day we could advance to all English classes, and give our seat/chair to a new child in need of the Bilingual Program.

Back to the point I really wanted to add in here; I had a teacher that was very dedicated to the students, and she always told us to read out loud the sentence we wrote in English because when we read in our ‘‘heads’’ the sentence sounded so clear and perfect, but when we read things out loud we would notice the mess we were in reality writing. Believe you me, it works. My daughter a Freelance writer, reads everything she writes out loud, and that’s when she catches the mistake she may have made (not too many though) but she always tells me; ‘‘Mom, this is the best method to catch up with anything that may fly by our brain.’’

So… I totally agree with you that if translators would read out loud their sentence/subtitle before they ‘‘plastered it’’ all over dramas/movies/shows, maybe they could ‘‘hear’’ how ridiculous that word VICARIOUSLY sounds in that specific sentence, and hopefully they could change it to something more appropriate/simple for viewers to grasp/accept.

When I was a moderator a long time ago, I share so many tips with the subbers in the team, but most of them were so ungrateful, and took it as a criticism from me, and not as someone trying to share the knowledge they had with them. I suggested they use the THESAURUS and find the synonym for a much simpler word than the one the Google Translate gave them (I knew most of them wrote 100% the sub from GT). I also told them to add spell check for their spelling correction since I was so sick of editing their work. I came to realize just now that they probably did it on purpose so I would give up on the project from so much extra work in editing.

This saying just came to my head: [
**You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink

Excerpt from Cambridge Dictionary

you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink

idiom saying

used to emphasize that you can make it easy for someone to do something, but you cannot force them to do it

  • ¡Guau, es una historia genial!

Some interesting facts on some research done.

The difficulties of learning a language depends on where you come from:

EUROPEANS: Are known to have a lot of difficulty learning Chinese/Mandarin.
ENGLISH is considered the #1 UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.
SPANISH IS SECOND.

I have noticed that when Spanish Native Speakers learn Korean and translate from their Spanish to English subtitles some words become totally out of context. On ■■■■■■■ they are going back to bad subtitles especially the drama DR. CHA.

One example I can mention here since as a Native Spanish speaker I could spot it right away (the drama’s translation lacks so much I might drop it).

In the end, my whole family learned the truth.
ULTIMATELY, my entire family found out the truth.
ULTIMADAMENTE, mi familia entera descubrió/descubrieron la verdad.

I’m putting these subs here just so whomever reads it, can have a good laugh since they can’t be ‘‘fixed’’ and no matter how much I request them to be ‘‘fixed’’ it seems they don’t care to do so. These are mainly from dramas from China and many are a literal translation from the English subtitle. They are mainly done by a person/human. and not AI, and I can tell you with 100% certainty since the wrong translated Spanish subtitles have both; question marks and or exclamation points etcetera (Artificial Intelligence subtitles never have them although the sub requires them).

Let’s begin…

The FL in the drama is going to donate blood to the ML who was injured, and of course, the Hospital has no AB type blood, but the FL conveniently is AB Blood type.

Dr. tells the FL
English sub - Your body is so thin are you sure you can smoke?
Spanish sub - Tu cuerpo es tan delgado, ¿seguro que puedes fumar?

I ask myself so many times: Why Spanish translation didn’t use the correct word which is DONAR since FUMAR is smoke. No matter how incorrect an English subtitle may be common sense dictates we must fix it and add the correct word.

So this is the funny part the Doctor rushing to the operating room adds:

Eng sub: Dr. :-We need blood transfusion and ENEMA first.
Span sub: Dr. - Necesitamos transfusiones de sangre y enema primero.

The guy was hit in the head with a baseball bat, and I wonder the purpose of the enema…lol (or if the Doctor really used the word enema).

The FL had told the Dr. in Spanish
Spanish sub - Soy una sangre.
English sub - I am a blood.

So if it wasn’t bad enough, the second female lead is also AB type blood, but didn’t offered (to the ML) herself to donate blood for who was to be her future husband. The SML in this dramas asked the SFL…

This is the sentence in English and Spanish
Eng sub: - Why don’t you go to American Kung Fu?
Span sub: - ¿Por qué no vas al Kung Fu Americano?

The SFL tells the FFL

  • Ahora soy su hombre.
  • Now I’m his man.

Span sub - Estoy a punto de ser su MARIDO.
Eng sub - I’m about to be someone’s husband.

Well, I believe it was supposed to be written as: Now, I’m his woman not man.
Also, I’m about to be his wife. (since she’s a female).

So the SFL tells the FL that she’s nothing but…
Eng sub: - It’s nothing more than a bargain to meet physical needs.
Span sub: - No es más que una ‘‘ganga’’ para satisfacer sus necesidades físicas.

SFL goes to front desk nurse to request medical history of the FL in the drama.

Spanish sub - Hola, necesito tener decenas de miles de informes de exámen. (oddly enough the nurse is a mind reader and gave her the report without a name given to her).

Eng sub - Hello, I need to get tens of thousands of examination report. (A bit too much it seems SFL wanted the whole hospital medical report tens of thousands?

In Puerto Rico bargain means a sale, and we also call it in Spanish a ‘‘ganga’’ but ''ganga in reality is referred as street gang members, so I had a good laugh with this one.

I have to point out that I was watching a new release drama here at viki, and a lot of the words were ‘‘made up’’ by the subber since such words in Spanish are nowhere to be found in a Spanish Dictionary. Of course, I’m assuming it needs EDITING work; so I’ll check to see if those words were removed from the subtitle in the near future. I think it was an AI pre-sub drama because it makes no sense for subbers to make up words and not think the viewer won’t notice.

If you have any funny subtitles that crossed your path, please, share them with us so we can have the best medicine in the world: LAUGHTER.

Is it not google translate?
Those are things I got copying to gt. (Spanish to English or English to Spanish, since I’m not sure which is original sometimes?)

Tu cuerpo es tan delgado ¿estás seguro de que puedes fumar?

¿Por qué no vas al Kung Fu americano?

Now I’m your man.

No es más que una ganga para satisfacer las necesidades físicas.

Hello, I need to have tens of thousands of exam reports.
